That worked out so well for them in the end. As of April 29, 2021 Defiance will be closing down its severs for good. Way to turn a good, entertaining game into a free to play cash shop, then close it down and screw over anyone who actually paid for it. It would be nice to have one final patch for the game to allow it to be played solo or private multiplayer. I's the least they could do for long time supporters who actually paid for the game back in the beginning.
While the game may not be perfect, and might not be what everyone is looking for, you will still get your $60 out of it no question. The buy to play model only adds to that as if you do decide to take a break or stop playing for a while, you can return and play again whenever you feel like it, adding lots of replay value. Combine that with the constant updates of an MMO style game and future DLC and expansion capability and you have yourself a winner.
