MD-3A Flight Deck Tractor

Description
The MD-3A Flight Deck Tractor was used aboard US Navy aircraft carriers for the purpose of towing aircraft about the flight deck, and when fitted with a Gas Turbine Unit (GTU) could be used to provide Bleed-Air to jet aircraft so as to start their engines. They saw service aboard US Navy Carriers from the early 1960's until the early 1990's, when they were replaced by the A/S32A-31A

This Stormworks MD-3A is great for towing smaller Naval aircraft when the tow bar is extended and attached. It also has a GTU which, doesn't produce bleed air, but can produce a continuous 200+ "Swatts". Which is very useful for recharging aircraft with 'dead' batteries quickly or providing electricity to aircraft that consume large amounts of electricity when their engines are off.

Notes:
- The 'GTU Running' light will stop blinking and remain on when the Turbine is fully operational, at which point the 'Bleed Air' can be engaged, which will provide power to the winch at the back of the tractor.
- The GTU can be left running while the Tractor is moving, however the 'Bleed Air' must be switched off if you wish to move the vehicle.

ENJOY!

Pear, wow thanks for the validation! Yeah, was super hard to find information about some of this older "yellow gear", as you mentioned it's pretty old. I went with the older equipment primarily because a variety of aircraft from a 30 year period (build by other folks) could 'sit' next to these vehicles and not look out of place. More importantly! Thank you for your service! I was US Army Infantry 10 years, and know little about Naval Ops, so having you comment on these means alot! THANK YOU!

Navy Aviation Support Equipment Technician (AS) here. We are responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of gear like this (Older guys refer to this as "yellow gear" for obvious reasons. The yellow is an old lead/chromate base that is no longer used, and all SE is mandated by the NAMP to be white now). On shore stations, we don't have the -31A, we have the A/S32A-45, and the -48. This is an awesome model, and it's great to see some of my SE on here, even stuff that's older than me lmao. Please keep up the awesome work!!

bearoll, you can use it with any aircraft that has a electrical plug. I tested with a large amount of Naval Aircraft currently available in the workshop. But it was designed primarily for use with jet powered aircraft that didn't have their own APU, such as A-7's, A-4's, F-4's F-14's etc. To get the Tow Bar off the tractor turn the key on the 'hitch point' at the back of the vehicle. Hope that helps, take care!

goodiehoodie007, thanks for the comment! Me personally, no I have enough on my plate. I can say however there are a few folks working aircraft carriers, one is the USS Ranger and the HMCS Bonadventure, and these tractors were used on both. As you can imagine, they are not easy builds, and it could take some time before they are finished. Take care!

Nice Work on this and random inquiry. Do you have plans to build an aircraft carrier to go along with this and the other carrier capable aircraft?

owlteam2005, it is a C-1A Trader used for Carrier Onboard Deliveries or COD by the US Navy throughout the 1960s and 1970s; or maybe your referring to the A-7 Corsair in the actual picture? Take care!
