Description
IMPORTANT NOTE: This addon activates sv_cheats! This is so that you cannot die from fall damage. Remember to turn it off if you play other addons after you finish!

This map is a collation of my climbing experiments. These are essentially examples of what you could do with the source 2 climbing features in your maps. If you would like to examine how these are done, the .vmap file is available here![drive.google.com].

So what's included? Well, there's both vertical climbing up a wall, and horizontal climbing across a gap (I labelled these wrong ingame, I was tired). Included are ladders, a pipe, ropes, a ledge that you can slide along, a rock wall, and even a zipline. I've also experimented with vaultable ledges, a climbable ledge and a climbable fence.

Finally, I have created a small enemy encounter where you must fight combine while holding onto a horizontal rope. This encounter is customisable. The weapons are hidden around the map, so that you're encouraged to look at everything it has to offer ;) (they're not that well-hidden).

Also, make sure that you have ladder climbing enabled, and don't play if you're prone to motion sickness. And if you are a content creator, please credit me by putting this workshop page in your description. Also, please link me the video you feature it in cause I wanna watch :).

FAQ

Why do I constantly break my bones when I fall?
Unfortunately, fall damage seems to be hardcoded into Half Life Alyx. Even worse, when climbing, it will sometimes kill you when you fall. Not every time, only sometimes. To get around this, I just godmode the player except for when the combat encounter is active. This is why sv_cheats is on.

Sometimes I don't grip ropes/poles properly
The climbing system is buggy. It might be my fault, but it seems to affect all ropes and such, so I'm not sure. Just be careful when climbing, make sure you've actually grabbed before letting go with your other hand

I used the small climbing section as a test. I'm planning on doing a whitebox of a level that will feature some climbing sections. I'll let you know once I get around doing it!

Hey Staryoshi thanks a lot for posting the map. I wanted to do lateral climbing but had trouble getting it to work correctly. After looking at your map it all became a lot clearer and allowed me to make a small climbing course. very interesting mechanic and map.

It's just godmode on the player. I disable it when in the combat encounter and re-enable it before the player hits the ground. I also have to enable sv_cheats otherwise it doesn't work in the main release (always test your map without the tools active, otherwise I wouldn't have discovered this issue)

I'm asking because I'm wondering if those same console commands could be used in other MOD maps to allow jumping down from high heights without dying.

Ah, that makes sense. By the way, what is the console command you're using to allow falling from high heights without dying?

The encounter is cancelled if you drop from the rope, so that you have to stay on the rope to shoot them.
