Do you like Wagner? His early work was a little too 'theatrical' for my taste, but when 'Der Ring des Nibelungen' came out in '82, I think he really came into his own – both commercially and artistically. The whole opera has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the work a big boost. He's been compared to Carl Maria von Weber, but I think Wagner has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '67, Wagner released this, 'Tristan und Isolde', his most accomplished piece. I think his undisputed masterpiece is 'Die Walküre', a piece so catchy most people probably don't listen to the notes – but they should! Because it's not just about the pleasures of charging at your enemy, and the importance of the cavalry, it's also a personal statement about love itself!
