A great addition to the lineup of Fromsoft games, but a bit lackluster when compared to the Souls series.

The first half of the game is amazing. The atmosphere especially, which was incredibly refreshing. There was tons of enemy variety and content seemingly out the wazoo.

But after fighting the Erdtree Avatar 20 times, fighting Morgott's "ghost" or whatever 10 times, doing the same copy and pasted catacomb 999 times, it gets stale. The boss fights never ceased to be awesome, but the absolute slog and grinding necessary to not be one shot by enemies in the late game is a genuine turn off. It's very difficult to only play through the story of this game if you want the later fights to be fair (TBH I don't use Ashes of War and solo everything, but I think the point still stands).

Dark Souls does not suffer from this issue at all, at the sacrifice of not being open world. You rarely if ever fight the same boss twice, the environments are never the same, the bosses are very difficult while properly balanced (for the most part), and most importantly, the atmosphere lingers. The soundtracks are bountiful and never re-used. Nothing in Dark Souls ever felt stale and copypasted like it did in Elden Ring. It's not bad at all, it's just Fromsoft foraying into the normie RPG territory.

If you want a different RPG with a much more in depth combat system, go for it. If you're a longtime Souls fan like me, it may not compare to the aesthetic experience of the older titles.

This game is superior (and longer lmao) to Fear 2.

It really is a worthy successor to the first game (as a lot of the same devs were working on it). The pacing and environments are just as eerie and haunting as the first game.

I'm gonna be totally honest the (spoiler) section in the vents where they stretch into infinity had me LITERALLY jump out of my chair.

My only real complaints with this dlc are mainly the music, and some story elements. The music in Fear 1 is used very rarely, and it's primarily to distinguish reality from the visions throughout the game (as well as intensity, but that's a given with lack of music). It makes the ending orchestration (when Harlan releases Alma) extremely emotional and tragic when he talks about locking her in the vault before her 8th birthday.

That tragic emotion is lost here, as almost every combat section has intense music to back it up. It isn't TOO jarring, but I noticed a real tangible difference in the atmosphere.

Ok the ending really pissed me off (major spoilers). Killing off all of the side characters was extremely disheartening and pointless. I'm not a fan of bad endings, but they need to at LEAST be conclusive. Fear 1 managed the dark and suspenseful story, while also creating somewhat dynamic and interesting side characters (and didn't kill them off)

Overall, play this over Fear 2. Any day. It has its faults, but it's still a great expansion. And pretty lengthy. Took me about 6 hours.

Please add an option to disable TAA. It makes the entire game look blurry as hell. I know TAA anti aliasing is a much cheaper method of smoothing object edges, but just let us disable it, it looks SOOOO bad. Had the same issue with Doom Eternal.
Gameplay is obviously fantastic it's halo

This game is phenomenally good, even when I booted it up for the first time and played through the intro, I could tell this game was made by dudes who knew what they were freaking doing. Everything in this game feels intended.

That's all there is to say I guess. EVERYTHING in this game feels intended. Incredibly interesting, and immaculately detailed.

(Also, I think I jumped out of my chair more in this game than in dead space, lol.)

Not nearly as intricate, detailed, and mature as its predecessor. The intro will scare the crap out of you, then every jump scare from that point on completely fails. There's no underlying tension or dread like the first game captured in that weird abstract sense. The HUD looks like it's from a kids game, it basically holds your hand through the entire friggin thing, and assumes this is your first FPS, highlighting enemies/telling you exactly what to do without letting you figure it out for yourself.

The DLC in my opinion is better than the entire main game. Worth it for the story, even if it is worse than the first game in every sense.

I slept on this game for a while, and I'm glad that I did actually. I would not have been able to appreciate the dense atmosphere and super lovecraftian inspired dreamscapes as a kid. Can't wait to play the next two games!
