Mixed

Good puzzle game with a classic style. Gameplay normal.
Ugly UI, cluttered and overstimulating. Overlapping text everywhere.

Verdict:
Sure, why not get it on sale?

Low input game. For folks who like hanging out but still want something to check up on that isn't social media. Nothing too inherently special about it, other than it takes plenty of time to get through sections. It's a numbers go up game. And sometimes that just scratches the right itch.

I would describe it as an automation game meets Kingdom of Loathing.

I wanted to play this, but never really got to it. Then a friend gave it to me for my birthday. I was busy for a while, and just got to it recently. And honestly I quite like it.

The cut scenes were annoying me a bit, but I have been learning German for years, so I set the audo dialogue to German and the text to English and I am using it like a fancy language instructor. Works great, adds a different puzzle aspect to the game.

Apart form gratuitous cut scenes, the rest of the game has been a dream. I have been enjoying the combat for a few hours now, and can say it is fairy smooth. Graphics are great, and it runs well. A gem of a game.

"Requires 3rd-Party Account: IdleOn Account "
Poor TOS.

I almost never thumbs down for TOS alone, but that's what this one does.
Account creation required AFTER the tutorial is a buzzkill.
As in, you start the game, THEN it blocks off the game.
If you know it, you can breeze through the tutorial instead of grinding from what you think is the first level... warning, it ain't.

An easy to take to game. Micro transactions available, but not necessary. More of a, pay to speed up progress type game. But for this type of game, delayed gratification is kind of the selling point, so no need to shell out for anything.

Automation vs active play is automation weighted, so it is a game you can leave on long hours while doing other things, checking in to maintain and upgrade. As far as active play goes, not much at all.

For me, it's a good chill out game to have running while I am doing other things. Easy to pick up and put down throughout the day. And that is what I was looking for in it.

I booted this game up to try it out. It is empty and broken. I can't play anything. So it is a broken Sega in your bedroom at night simulator. Maybe that's more accurate and realistic, but I kinda wanted to play old sega games.

I can't recommend it, because I could not play any sega games. And that is literally all it is.

Review edit:

At higher levels the monetary gap becomes more prevalent. It gets harder to play the game without better gear, which is hard to get without playing the game for a long, long time. So definitely rewards a slow burn style and it rewards you for being willing to run your character ragged in a pinch. No keeping healed and repaired type stuff. With the strongest weapons you can waste a fortune in a matter of hours simply due to ammunition prices. But melee that runs without ammo is not as viable for looting. And your inventory is not large enough to stockpile the ammunition. So even with spectacular gear, you have to be careful how you use it. Very 2d-DF style in that respect. Scrape by no matter what level you are until you find that lucky break that most players never get.

Old review:

Having played DF1 since 2009 I would naturally take to the re-imagined world in DF2. It has a lot of sounds and tropes that DF1 2D was great at. So this review will be from my standpoint.

This is a nostalgia game built in modern times to remember the ones we enjyed so much. L4D, Doom, Nether, Fallen Earth, Dead Frontier, etc... obscure games and popular alike, they were all part of what people who played DF enjoyed. We all had a lot of fun for many years, and some folks are still going today.

What to expect from DF2:
A fallen earth/nether type experience in settings and feels.
A Creaky Corpse "never give up" attitude. This game will be in development longer than you want to play it, because as long as they can afford it, they won't stop working on it or a similar iteration of it.
A L4d/Doom sense of creativity in enemies. We all enjoyed the 90s and 00s horror games, and that enjoyment shows through in DF in new and fun creatures being constantly imagined.

Downside:
Creaky Corpse has monetary options like Gold Membership. The devices will always exist in their games. You are never forced to buy a GM, but it helps make the game faster. There are players in all of Neil's games who never spent a penny and still came out on top. And that is who they are geared to. Folks who want a grind.

My personal outtake on DF games is that they are a chill out grind, and a horror night fun. Making friends or bringing friends is essential, as the best part of these games are hanging out with your people grinding away shooting the ♥♥♥♥. Like old folks at a diner, out generation is the old folks chilling in the MMO+Voice Chat.

PS: Not AAA. Until recently Neil Yates didn't have many folks working on his games at all, and the number has increased but not drastically. He hired a lot of people he met through the game and they are doing an amazing job on the team, especially Clayton, who helped turn DF1 around and bring me back to the franchise as a player. As such, you can expect the staff to be individualistic folks who put their time into the work and are immersed in it. But support wise they are just doing their best and you will have to have patience with them to enjoy this game. The reality of releasing new updates often is that glitches occur and individualized support can slow down when a glitch is being patched. Be patient, be kind. They are doing their best.

When this was first a thing as a browser game, I broke it a few times by going too high. It was fun then. Now it is refined a bit, and still fun. It is the sort of game to enjoy idly as you hang out and do something else at the same time. The sort of game that multi tasks well. And that, for me, is fantastic.

The type of player I would suggest this to is the busy family type or the always working type. Someone who has other things to do but still wants a little nonsense waiting for them later. it can count while you are away, leaving you with a fun surprise when you come back. Nothing too special or whatever. Just another game to enjoy.

It is a long haul type game too. Leave it running a while and check in every day or so, more or less doesn't matter much. But persistence gets you there.

I particularly like the soothing music. But it has an audio off switch in the menu if you disagree.

I like that moment when an ecosystem takes off faster than you could have predicted and the counter breaks and you are beyond what the game was meant to do. It's a fantastic game of evolution. I would very much like to see land biomes as well, but I am still trying to finish the ocean anyway.

As far as entertainment per dollar, this holds up damn well. It has me coming back after the initial hype of getting the game. It seems like one could spend countless hours developing the biomes and designing the creatures. We'll see how it holds up over the years, but initially it is spectacular.
