The gameplay itself is great. Lots to learn and a lot of fun while doing it. Once you get a feel for the combat system, the game feels like you're playing the anime. Voice acting is top notch. Graphics look incredible, and the music is catchy.

The game comes with the following gameplay modes:

Episode Battles - This is the game's "story mode." Most of the story is told through very basic cutscenes and in-game voice acting. Each character's story mode can branch off with "what if" stories if you achieve specific objectives during a fight (typically, defeat the enemy quickly before time runs out).

Custom Battles - these are stories that are created by players. There's also a few scenarios that unlock several custom battle templates to use in create mode. The combination of options given can create an incredible amount of custom made content. However, the interface to create a Custom Battles was poorly designed. While I appreciate the literal thousands of pre-generated dialogue that can be used in each scene, navigating through it is tidious. Adding a "search" feature here would've been invaluable.

Battle - This mode is your basic "choose a character and opponent" and fight. Online mode allows you to fight opponents online via "ranked" matchmaking, or unranked lobbies. I don't understand why matchmaking couldn't be utilized for both ranked and unranked.

Super Training - Train against a CPU with various AI settings, or play the tutorial. The training mode is missing a button input HUD that is in most fighting games, as well as other training data that is typically included in other fighting games.

World Tournament - This mode also includes an Online and Offline mode. Online mode is setup using player lobbies, with the host setting the tournament rules. Offline mode has a selection of tournament modes - World Tournament (which has a "ring out" rule), Cell Games (player health only recovers 20% between fights, with Cell being the final battle), Other World Tournament (same as Cell games, but full health recovery and final battle opponent is random), Tournament of Destroyers (Team battle, but no character swapping), Tournament of Power (Team battle, character swapping allowed, but ring out is on), and Yamcha Games (all characters are randomly selected, with the final battle vs Yamcha).

TL;DR

The game has a variety of game modes that center around the games core fighting mechanic. The fighting gameplay is an entertaining game of timing, creativity, and strategy. It differs from traditional fighting games where combo memorization is important.

It's an addicting fun fighting game, especially for fans of the series. The $100 "ultimate" bundle DOES NOT INCLUDE the anime music packs. This is a separate purchase.
