[Disclaimer: I do not play multi, nor do I really intend to. I just like playing around with the units on screen at a slow pace.]

Pretty satisfying overall, especially with the new voice dubs and stability/balance patches.

I was an avid player of SS2's solo mode in the mid 2000s'.
At the crux of SS games are the infantry and sightline management. Your soldiers are your most precious resource. They die, you're screwed.
This makes you feel responsible for your own troops, as opposed to C&C style mass slaughter (granted, infantry is less squishy in SS4 than in SS2, but at least this makes medics more able to do their work). This rewards slow-paced, deliberate and focused micromanagement, along with intelligent fog-of-war handling. It's not because you don't see the enemy that they can't see you.

I can say that Kite has managed to convingcingly capture and expand the experience that FireGlow had created.
Considering that the game was initially somewhat lackluster on launch, and crashed often, the dev team has come a long, long way. The work put in to make SS4 into what it is now is clearly deserving of respect.

----------------------------
My complaints:

UX-wise: it would have been good to explain in-game what officers can do (aka spot units otherwise hidden by cover). I was kind of wondering where the binoculars had gone (though I haven't replayed the tutorial since 2017, so maybe that changed).

Visual design: slightly better colour contrast on medics' and officers' appearances could be better for identification purposes. They were easier to identify in SS2 despite being the size of a pixel ant.

-------------------------------------------
The bright side:

AT guns aren't as brutal as they were in SS2. At least now tanks can take more than just a single 50mm hit before being knocked out.

A very good co-op experience, with a unique concept that hasn't aged a bit. A very friendly playerbase. You'll always eventually start chatting with the rest of the crew with the VOIP system, which really makes you feel that you are playing a *team* game.

Good pilotes are rare unfortunately these days. Don't be afraid to try it out yourself.:)

Absolutely brilliant concept and execution, even for an incomplete game. As opposed to DayZ, where survival is a goal in itself, "Sir, you are being hunted" has a general objective. The latter which is single and clear, but while still giving you immense freedom when it comes to choosing your way to success.

Although you have multiple personas to choose from (trapper, drunk, artist...), the Aristocrat is still the one that gives you the fullest experience (nothing but bandages at the start). I'd recommend starting with him.

Note for Vista users: It works, BUT will drain more resources than it should because of the lack of support for this OS (and hence optimization). Older average computers running Vista will be put under stress and can overheat as a result.

I once was a good CS player.

The Scout and P228 were my weapons, Inferno and Scud my maps.

Les Boulets and United Kommandos my favourite servers, Tugas and Russians my favourite players.

Hectic Gun Games for the raep, 50 player deathmatches for the lulz.

But since March 2011, the prince has lied there in my Library; I now play TF2.

Good night sweet prince.

Abuse firearms for maximum lulz. Most people play Warband and and Napoleonic Wars though.

Think of it as an easier IL-2 with a progression. Russian planes are fun and level up somewhat faster, German starting ones are probably the weakest and you'll need to grind a bit with them to start getting dem 109's and kick ass.

What's better than playing to the music you love ? Okay okay, having sex to the music you love.

But oldschool electro doesn't go with everything, so better stick to this in the meantime X)

I've found this game much more fun than the L4D series, with more variety ("perks", the weapons, the speedkill combos...), complexity, and where each and every player has a role.

Also

"I told you, AH AM WELDING THIS DOAH!"
"DOSH !"
"Now THIS is a big sodding gun!"
"YOU'RE ALL FUR COAT & NO KNICKERS ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ !"
"You gormless tosser !"
"Mind where you're waving that pal !"

Priceless...
