I long shunned it because it was often marketed as a spiritual successor of the OG game; but Doom 3 was also nothing like the OG and I still appreciated it.
Doom 2016 is a pretty good boomer shooter. Sure, the base movement speed could be a tiny bit higher, but otherwise the game is pretty fun. It does not force you to take X weapon for Y enemy, and you're free to shoot what you want when you want, although a little bit of weapon switching goes a long way.
I'm not fond of the armour thing on pinkies, but I suppose they wanted to make them a little more than just frontline sponges.
The weapons look cool and mostly play cool (though the combat shotgun could use a tiny bit more power), and weapon mods are an interesting addition (appart for one or two that aren't that good). Glory kills can seem a bit cheesy, but overall they're satisfying at times and yet aren't mandatory. In fact the game teaches you in higher difficulties that because you CAN glory kill doesn't mean you always should...
So long as you don't expect a game entirely like the first two, it's a solid semi old school shooter with relatively satisfying gunplay.
