Early Access Review
Fun While it lasted

Imagine taking a RTS, slowing the match down to taking 10 to 20 hours to complete and not having the convince of an over head map to tell your NPCs were to go. That's Aska.

To place markers you must run places with your character a build the marker. To remove it you must run back out there and destroy it.

The entire game is about how long you can survive, it's not a building game but a very slow RTS. So if you don't mind getting 20 hours in only to loose the match and have to start all over again, this is the game for you.

I can't imagine anyone playing this game single player. Multiplayer it was bearable as we were able to split tasks of baby sitting the your vikings. Who at the end of each work shift just drop resources were ever they are to be left to decade. The NPC's got the items from storage they can put them back. If you leave your village alone for more than a day in game, they will deplete most resources because of this bug.

The fishing was the most amusing. The fisher would just jump out of the boat and leave it swimming back to shore. Then complain they had no boat. Or they would manage to row the boat back to the fishing hut, but it wasn't quiet right and they would complain they didn't have a boat.

The blacksmith will just keep the furnish going and waste all your coal and slag some of your blooms. Fun times.

So in short requires a lot of baby sitting for this "automated" processes to work. They are not so automated.

Updated Review for ASKA: Fixing Resource Respawns and Surviving Winter

Since ASKA doesn’t tell you that resources don’t respawn—a feature common in almost every survival game I’ve played—and fails to guide you effectively to survive your first winter, here’s a workaround to fix resource depletion and still enjoy the game.

This solution has been tested in single-player and server games. You can even copy saves between the server and single-player modes for testing.

Steps to Reset Resources

1. Back Up Your Save Game
Locate your save game folder here:

`C:\Users\(YOUR USER NAME)\AppData\LocalLow\Sand Sailor Studio\Aska\data`

To quickly navigate:
  • Open File Explorer.
  • In the address bar, type `%appdata%` and press Enter.
  • Navigate up one directory to LocalLow, then find the ASKA folder.

2. Create a New Game with the Same Seed
Use the same seed as your current game and ensure the settings match exactly.

3. Copy Resource-Related Files
Close ASKA and open the folder for your new game. Copy the following files into your old save’s folder:
  • biomePopulations
  • Invasions
  • vegetationAvailability

This restores hunting populations and vegetation.

4. Restore Harvested Trees, Rocks, and Terrain

For trees, rocks, and other harvested resources, locate files in the save folder that start with numbers (these represent the grid areas of your island). Copy these files from the new game to your old save.

Note: Doing this resets the terrain entirely, meaning your village will be surrounded by foliage again. You’ll need to use your hoe to flatten and clear the area.

Final Thoughts

Using this method, we managed to save our game during the holidays and continue playing. However, this process highlights a significant issue with ASKA’s design.

This fix is a temporary workaround, but it shows that ASKA has potential if these issues are addressed. Until then, players will need to rely on creative solutions like this to keep the experience fun.

Message to the Developers
You’ve clearly tested and played the game enough to understand what’s needed to survive winters, invasions, and resource management. Why not teach these mechanics to players instead of expecting them to figure it out through trial and error?

Also, winter length should have its own dedicated setting for better customization.
