Marvel Rivals has a strong foundation but suffers from it's lack of role queue and no incentives for playing unpopular roles / characters, making the game basically unbearable beyond a few matches a day.

If this game can add those two things, it might be the best Hero Shooter of all time, or one of the best.

The more I play this game the more I despise it's abhorrent design. I have close to 250 hours, three characters (two of which are far into endgame) and it feels like everything in this game is built specifically for me to not have fun. From one portals per maps to horribly designed boss mechanics and the god awful several decade year old trading system that for some reason hasn't been overhauled, it's like the developers are begging me to go back to Diablo 4. I get that it's early access, but a lot of these "design choices" were clearly made early into development since so much revolves around them. I think the developers want to make a more extensive Path of Exile 1 Ruthless and I don't think there is a playerbase for this. If they continue down this route the game will be dead within a few years.

The endgame specifically is the worst part of this game, and dare I say might actually be worse than Diablo 4's endgame on release. It lacks cohesiveness, it lacks polish, it lacks player agency and choice and it lacks so many other things. I could go on and on about how awful the endgame is but I'll keep it short and limit it to one major issue: forcing players to run expensive and overpowered builds because you are punishing them with this almost child-like, stupid "one life" system. Forcing players to spend several HUNDREDS of hours to get to an endgame boss only for you to die in one second is not cool. It is not "quirky" and it certainly isn't fun in any way, shape or form. This forces players to pivot away from okay builds to insane one shot builds just so they can get the pinnacle loot. It's almost as if this was solved in Path of Exile 1..

If you are a new player I implore you to wait until the game is actually out before you buy in. It might be fun for a bit and it's certainly addicting but with the direction design is heading in this game I cannot recommend this to anyone who isn't super hardcore, loves to run OP, excessive builds and wants to be kicked down by the developers every time they try to get back up.

Incredibly overrated game. I enjoy complexity but this game borders on obscenity, having like 20 tabs per every single action and overwhelming the player with an absurd amount of tooltips and reading. I bought the game to play a game, not to read a book.

The DLC really isn't as bad as a lot of the reviews are touting. I understand the price point concerns, and yes I would really only recommend this DLC on sale ~$20 or so but the core quality of the DLC and the amount of content you get is pretty substantial and meaty. It's not in any way lacking, in my opinion. Story is interesting enough, the locations is pretty cool, it's nice to not have to deal with 30 minutes of cutscenes between locations over and over and there's just enough new side content to keep you interested.

Can't really recommend this game in it's current state due to the lack of Ultrawide or FOV slider options. It seems like a massive nitpick but this is 2024, not 2014, and these features should be basic attachments on release.

The Good:
- Good combat.
- Very good story, lore and world building.
- Level design works when it works.
- Decent basic mechanics (e.g. estus upgrades, etc.) but it feels bland since this is in every soulslike ever.
- Decent exploration mechanics and rewards.
- Cutscenes are excellent.

The Bad:
- Optimization is subpar.
- Some story NPCs get literally zero screentime, some REALLY interesting NPCs are basically shown very little. Maybe they're saving them for a sequel? Idek.
- The weapon upgrade system and armor upgrade system becomes boring after about Chapter 2-3 since it's literally just the same thing over and over, i.e. "beat major boss -> new set -> craft it all -> repeat" not sure why you can't find sets in the world and stuff or have these as rewards for side quests..
- Honestly the soundtrack isn't really that good.

The Ugly:
- Horrible boss mechanics pretty much across the board. Unnecessary wind ups, sometimes there's no wind ups, bosses immediately jump back up when attacked after being flinched (why???), some bosses have way too much health.
- The difficulty spiking is all over the place, one major boss is easy as hell and the next one is somehow harder than every boss in the game and then it flip flops over and over for no reason.
- No map hurts this game probably more than anything, exploration at times is such a pain in the butt since everything just melts together environment wise so you end up constantly backtracking and going over the same locations over and over, artificially boosting game time way beyond what it needs to be. Look at how Souls handles level design, miles better.
- Having no obvious world border makes for absurdly obnoxious exploration.
- Bugs that affect combat begin to pop up around Chapter 4, currently dealing with one that turns the destined one into a giant slug and makes all of his movements 10x slower out of nowhere which makes boss fights tedious as ♥♥♥♥.
- A lot of side quest NPCs are very bland and most side quests basically are "hey get this thing for me, thanks now I sell u things" and it's laughable how bad these quests are when compared to the games that inspired this.

tl;dr add a map for christs sake, make bosses less obnoxious, give NPCs more love, fix world borders and make the difficulty more consistent.

The gameplay loop (to me) is extremely repetitive, the lack of tutorials and information is astoundingly obnoxious and anti-noob and the story is genuinely horrendous.

It's definitely one of those cases where I'd give this a "Mixed" Review if Steam allowed it, but I'll be leaning towards a "No" here simply due to the fact that this game is extremely unfriendly for new players.

If you have a friend who you are willing to voice chat with to teach you the ropes, absolutely give this a purchase. If not, don't bother in my opinion.

Game is genuinely great but I can't recommend it to anyone new because of it's horrible NPE (New Player Experience) as well as the fact that Valve just up and abandoned the game out of nowhere one day and only really updates it for cosmetics. So many bugs and exploits and issues and balancing messes exist within this game to date and that is unacceptable when you're adding microtransactions and not bothering to do anything else.
