XIII is a classic. Old school gunplay with a great visual style. Featuring David ''bored'' Duchovny and Adam West.

Amazing soundtrack, innovative dialogue system and legit shiver-inducing atmosphere make for a captivating indie experience.

One of the most important shooters in it's own right, nevermind the fact its legacy kickstarted the biggest ever FPS revolution 4 years later.

Good game. Not bad, not great.

The city and artwork are eyegasm-worthy, but are countered by tedious story with a plottwist you can see coming from the start of the game and typical mute empty husk of a protagonist.

Gameplay overall feels positive. Unfortunately playing it nonlethal (necessary for good ending) can become quite tedious and exhausting, especially compared to just blowing through and murdering everyone in exquisite fashion.

Fortunately the game's biggest plus is it's willingness to allow you to break the conventions of normal gameplay
The most obvious example of this is ''Blink'', an extremely overpowered ability that has you teleporting all over the map.
What's amazing is that these things actually don't break the experience, and make gameplay much more fun.

Then there's the DLC..

This is honestly my favourite thing about the game, and it makes you notice how bland the base game's story really is.
Protagonist Daud (voiced by the ever magnificent Michael Madsen) is an interesting character with quite a lot on his mind. It's interesting to see how the player can make his already well-established personality their own through different playstyles and actions. Gameplay is further improved as well (god bless you, timestopping Blink ability) and the story is a vast improvement of the base game.
I cannot stress this enough: The real game lies in the DLC for me

This is a very enjoyable and solid experience, even today.

The story is quite intriguing, though mostly because of how complex and groundbreaking it was 15 years(!) ago.
Combat however, is very clunky and inefficient. Especially melee: trying to hit anything with your tiny T-rex arms is insanity itself.
Overall though, this is one of those games where the sum of all parts makes for a better product: an environment that feels lived-in, with characters that seem alive (bad pun), and a gameplay experience that feels like life or death.

Calling it ''the best game ever'' seems like a bit of a stretch today,
But it's hard not to see why it was thought of as just that back in '99.

I can not recommend this game enough.
Top down ultraviolent fast twitch-gameplay meets careful planning and choreography .
The soundtrack is the best i've heard all year, and it works together with the candycoated environments to create a mood of slick neon-drenched 80´s chaos.
