In Arma 2 you had to manually install mods. In Arma 3 they added the steam workshop and it's so much easier to get player made content loaded into Arma, which makes this review a recommendation already. The game is beautiful and despite that I can run it on my laptop (it's a HP Omen, which is a gaming laptop- but not stellar specs). I haven't had any lag or problems on medium graphics. The gameplay is fun and I've been mindlessly playing the campaign (the prologue is a bit slow; but, I think that's just because I already knew the controls from Arma 2). The community is huge, and there's tons of servers and groups of people who are open to new players coming to join in their operations (like Mil-Sim).

There's even a mod for Halo and Warhammer 40k

The game is really old. It can be seen in the mechanics and graphics of the game. It's really hard to play the game because it's extremely complex and reminds me of a Dwarf Fortress in space. I have no idea why someone would subject themselves to attempting to understand this game and play it, unless they really enjoy nitty gritty commandering and strategy in space. I just wouldn't personally play it. The AI is fantastic though and the game is actually really hard, you can't really steamroll over the enemy.

It was really cool when it was free to play on the browser and simpler. I don't like the gameplay anymore (guns feel clunky and there's many more advanced and niche weapons like launchers or miniguns now) and the small number of players really limit the amount of lobbies to pick from.

Must have this if you're going to play Arma2. A lot of the mods require it (pretty much all) and the still active playerbase is on operation Arrowhead. If you play it, go play some domination (you launch missions from a airfield to conquer villages and towns from the insurgent forces with your friends) and download mods to play the Island Life or DayZ mods on Arma2. A lto of people prefer the DayZ mod over the game, and I agree with them.

This game is really outdated and is really only used as a base for people to play the DLC operation arrowhead on. No point in buying Arma2 without the DLC. Better yet, just get Arma3 if you can run it.
