This game is one of my favourite games of all time. The mysterious and macabre Spencer Mansion is an intricate puzzle waiting to be solved. The early Resident Evil games weren't about the combat instead they were the grandchildren of more cerebral games like Sweet Home on the NES. If you want to experience true stressful survival horror I'd recommend playing on hard, especially as Jill. While many complain about the restrictive camera angles and 'tank' controls very few realise that these very mechanics were deliberate to create tension and a feeling of claustrophobia.
Strangely the dialogue in the game really isn't enthralling, Shinji Mikami wanted the game to have the impression of a B movie and that, combined with translation to English has left the voice acting rather cheesy. The games narrative truly shines with the backstory revealed through diary entries and files that leave the player to construct a horrifying tale.
I cannot recommend this game more to someone who likes their horror with a bit more mystery rather than gunning down hordes of monsters.
