Generally cards add points to your side of the board or remove from your opponent's, but they can have additional abilities like tutoring or transforming other cards. Abilities can be rather complex.

Indeed, with the best-of-three round system it provides a very flexible and freeing player experience compared to mana-ramping/face-hitting alternatives. It's a beautiful game.
