I have had so much fun in this game. Combat does take a bit to get use to and I am rubbish at the combos but they really don't seem to be too important. ***SPOILER*** You can still do well in combat if you are careful only to face people one on one initially and spend as much time training with Bernard as you can (when you get to that point).
