Basically - in a nut shell - You create a hero (race, class, specialties). Your hero is like your commander-n-chief of your army and empire. From there you create an empire (sort of like civilization) but you also engage in strategic TBC and gain experience and get to upgrade your hero, strengthen his/her stats, your army, research new spells or enhancements for your army, hero, or empire...
THERE IS A LOT TO LEARN... I can only say that you can not get a good enough idea about it until you try it ;D
