This is a tough one. This game has fun combat at times, and the looting is very satisfying. Unfortunately a mixture of clunky controls, painfully bad human AI, and immersion breaking gameplay elements bring the experience down hard.

The two handed weapon against zeds is a blast. I found myself craving a little play time just to go bash a few skulls. The ability too interact with the zeds with your off hand while using small puncture weapons is another cool feature that made sneaking around a lot of fun. Once it came to human enemies, things change a bit for the worse. Any agro'd enemy seemed to be happy to charge around the corner and get blasted in the face with my shotgun like the 10 before them, and they more or less ran around like maniacs when not taking turns to get shot in the face, but more on the AI later.

Its a visually pleasing game. Kinda reminds me of the style Telltalegames used for The Walking Dead series. There were some dark and creepy moments that provided some of the best vr atmosphere to date. It's too bad those moments didn't last for too long.

I'm only 10 days in, and I can tell that there are ups and downs to the looting system. Every time you go back to an area previously looted, the loot has respawned. Each day that passes results in less loot spawning in, but it didn't make a lot of sense for it to be constantly shifting around at night. The act of searching through cabinets and closets is a lot of fun and reminds me of HL:A. One personal gripe is that there is never anything to be found on dead zeds, and enemies like to smash their weapons on the ground when killed.

Once things started to get more hectic, I felt the clunky controls taking a tole. There is a weight to everything in the game. This works well with melee combat, but it often led to me tossing my single handed weapon on the ground instead of my holster. I lost multiple high quality shivs because of this and that is extremely frustrating when it happens. Unless you take a solid second and exaggerate your every hand gesture, your gear is likely to go flying around the environment.

Then there is the (lack of) human AI. I found myself held at gunpoint for medical supplies by a woman while a group of walkers walked up and started attacking her. She just stood there pointing her gun at me until being bitten. Kinda takes you out of the experience. I found myself just killing anything and anyone with 2 legs and felt nothing because the humans were just as brain dead as the zeds

And then there is the daylight mechanic. When you are out looting, you have a limited amount of time before the bell rings and all the angry zeds comes out. You are meant to loot and leave before the bell goes off. I got caught out in the open once so I figured I would wait out the night under a house while the horde roamed the streets. 15 minutes later I was searching the forums to see how long night lasts only to find out it lasts forever. The planet just stops rotating when the sun goes down? This feels lazy and left unfinished. Why not have the option to wait out the night but take a stamina drain for it? It is just another thing that pulls you out of the experience.

The health, food, and stamina system also leaves something to be desired. I'll keep this part short, but let's just say the devs believe that eating a few granola bars and drinking a few sodas will literally KILL a healthy adult... This is what i call artificial difficulty. They couldn't figure out how to balance the game, so they make a poptart deal more damage than a zombie biting you on the neck

It is a fun vr experience at times, and I had a few great scares from the Zeds while looting. Would be nice if the zeds didn't EXPLODE THE DAMN DOORS! Seriously though, if you so much as touch a door nob with a zed on the other side, the door will loudly explode in your face as the hulk zombie walks through it. Sadly a few cool ideas doesn't make up for the number of immersion breaking gameplay elements and clumsy controls.

@zer0sum Am I a bad person for hoping that COVID was going to BE the zombie virus?

It's 2020, the humans are as brain dead as the zeds.
