Everyone's overstating the grind in this game; I got content gated once, having only really gone out of my way to do the University of Trials missions (which are absolutely amazing tutorials by the way), and even then, as long as you take decent contracts, the grind isn't bad at all. Hell, you can go do multiplayer to get the XP instead, even if it is a bit lackluster.
