Early Access Review
i have 13k hours in nmrih1. i provided feedback when nmrih2 was being privately playtested, and i have to rate this negatively because most of the problems back then were not addressed. it fails to capture pretty much everything that makes the first game fun.

the original game had a lot of replayability, with a wide range of maps and modes, from casual rounds in cabin with slow shamblers to long custom maps full of runners.

this was further enhanced by plugins and community-made content, which i've personally poured thousands of hours into creating. now, this is impossible because you're gatekeeping the server-side behind cloud instances that, for many, don't even provide a decent lag-free experience due to geolocation. i guess this was done to force a character progression system on people so they level up—but quite frankly, i find it dumb. in nmrih1, everyone was equal. there were no rpg-like mechanics, just yourself and whatever you found on the ground—easy to understand, hard to master.

you also had cool mechanics like airstrafing, bhopping, kiting runners, etc. all of this was unintended but added a layer of freedom and skill to the game. now it's been replaced with generic capsule-based wasd movement, with virtually no depth.

melee made up most of the gameplay in nmrih1, and it's terrible here. nothing connects, and when it does, the animations look out of sync or npcs teleport around. again, melee was like 90% of nmrih1, with firearms being secondary, used only to get out of chokepoints.

the world feels empty. nmrih1's zombies were kind of dumb and slow, but it was balanced by the fact your character was asthmatic. that's not been addressed here. the openness of the map means you can still walk past pretty much everything and chill until extraction unless you're unlucky enough to encounter a runner that takes 20 shots to kill.

there's no proper shoving, the feature that rewarded quick reaction time and fast turns. you could even learn to chain multiple shoves if you were skilled enough. it's been replaced with an ugly quick reaction event that's a) too easy to perform and b) annoying after the third time you see it.

nmrih1 was a happy accident and not what the devs originally intended, but i'm begging the higher-ups making decisions to please hop on nmrih1 and check out how people are playing it today because it would seem like you haven't actually played it in ages (or ever) or you don't care to replicate the experience that got you here in the first place.

Online-only really is killing gaming. They could've at least let people see how the game was meant to play without all the server issue bs if it at least had that, but no. Unbelievable we've sunken to the point where people think it's not an issue, it's become too normalized. Great review though. I'm nowhere near as close to your hours, personally at about 150 but been playing since 2014. It makes me very happy to see someone else who actually played the original & isn't afraid to point out major flaws that a lot of others are skipping over.

yup, i think the biggest sad for me is seeing no server side access, so no private servers or trying to play Single Player alone, let alone being no access to plugins and such

Them adding progression system must have something to do with the developers being acquired by Torn Banner Studio (the one that make chivalry 1 & 2)

Mate there is shoving though? Right click with a melee out or I believe F is the default shove with a firearm out.

I 100% agree with you. It's the most accurate review, and it's also the person you felt when you started Nmrih2 first. We're mad at this game. We're finally showing our true feelings. We're very disappointed with the no more room in hell 2 game
