Basically plays game like it's a job, but it's not. My Youtube channel is slowly growing into something I'm getting more and more proud of.

I seem like an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in the article:angrypoop: I just take my reviews seriously, it's a passion of mine and it's fun to put all my thoughts in basically an essay, getting less frequent now with videos taking priority:awkward:

A solid 6/10 game

Lackluster campaign
Weirdly enough the first Space marine, 13 years ago had a more interesting campaign as you had more variety of enemies and game-play sections. It's ork turret section was funny seeing rockets strapped to fly and kamikaze. But Space Marine 2 does a better job at explaining what the hell is going on at least for the intro, like what are space marines and why are we fighting? To kill chaos. I know warhammer has a low bar, but a win is a win

At the time of writing Nov. 27th I forgot to finish the campaign because for the first month of release it crashed towards the end half a dozen times and I just wasn't interested in finishing it solo because the story is not the draw. Aka don't get this for the campaign, it's not the length, my favorite warhammer game is still Shoota Blood and Teef, a 5 hour game. Space Marine 2 is a "AAA nothing burger" that has nothing really happen but people talk and do stuff like telling the main character Titus the same thing from the first game "chaos is bad and just to trust the emperor" if this was a reboot I could understand it being a retread but it's a sequel and I expect an awesome campaign if you're gonna have so much story. We have a lady that told us we're a heretic and then we kill her and I don't even know why. The villain afterward was an epic fight and a step up compared to the first game by a light-year

Better than From Software?
The level design and scale is insanely epic and I could not imagine how much glee it must bring to warhammer fans now that you finally have a game that doesn't suck ass. In the campaign you get a few great moments like being able to use the jet-pack with a hammer and bolter, keep hordes away with a flamethrower and wide array of weapons that feel amazing to use with some fights feeling like your against all odds and the sound, detail and visceral effect will make you scream in excitement at many jaw dropping moments. Also the boss fights in this game are all amazing and seriously better than From Software when it comes to designing them for co-op. Yes, you have to design bosses differently for solo and co-op, it's why I always play From Software games solo. Side tangent over.

The missions themselves though feel lackluster at times, not just because context is still sparse beyond the chaos and heresy is bad trope that I can not believe they still don't explain in detail. Like how hard is it explain your lore that fans tell me is amazing. If not for my friend to play along with I would again have no idea what is going on. I'm not expecting a movie, but I understood Doom's Eternal's story and it's got less cut-scenes than Space Marine 2. The other aspect is some missions feel like co-op templates like stand in this circle to increase the progress bar.

Co-op is King
The saving grace is the campaign is playable in co-op and if not I wouldn't have gotten this game. Well the reason I got this game is because my friend is a huge warhammer fan and gifted it to me because he was so interested in playing it more than any of the co-op games I've tried to get him into. But this being warhammer makes him happy and it's nice to see that excitement from a grown man, there isn't much to happy about in life at time. I mean when you can get a person that doesn't play with randoms or watch video guides to min-max to do that. That ♥♥♥♥ is impossible not to have that passion rub off to me while playing.

Issues that prevent it from being one of the GOATs
This list is mostly gonna be complaints that annoy me because the game is fun. I wouldn't play it if it actually sucked. But I only play this with my friend. If I truly love a co-op game I play it with randoms, this isn't true for this game because of the reasons below.

  • First game had 4 weapons, this sequel is downgraded to two and that sucks. So many weapons and you only get one and a lame pistol. Shooters have evolved past generic pistols or flatout removed them.
  • Why do you have the same sound for the parry and unparrable attacks, visual color isn't enough. You hear before you see the effect
  • We need load-outs for the times you want to have specific perks for certain weapons and missions. We have weapon load-outs but not for perks?
  • Perks are either broken or boring, most are boring for over half of the class's tree until you get to near the max levels. This is why I mained only 2 classes.
  • Weapon perks are somehow worse, you can only go down one path and it's so boring, like 10% damage increase or increase ammo capacity? Seriously are we a looter shooter. Basically all weapon perk trees need an overhaul.
  • I stuck to the heavy class which has a shield and big guns that go boom and I'm a simple man. Then went the grapple guy with you guess it the melta gun, the cool melting shotgun because again I'm a simple man.
  • Why are the rest boring? Because two of six are melee and it's just spam light and heavy one or twice. There is no interesting combos, it's a snoozfest as it's just a basic melee and those pistols
  • The sniper has a low ammo count and so you have to.... you guessed it....use the boring pistols
  • Why can't the classes have an uzi or bolter for the non-heavy classes, like the jet-pack with a hammer is fun for a bit, but gets old fast when you only have a pistol, seriously the variety of weapons to bring on a mission makes it feel repetitive
  • Then you have a severe lack of enemy variety and when you pair that with lack of interesting perks, it's hard to want to want to try out other classes.
  • The load times on the barge get old, especially when you load it a random lobby and you can't pick your class, because that would break the game if you have more than one and have to leave. Have a lobby system or something to make this easier, it's 2024 why is loading times an issue with an SSD.
  • The classes in co-op are lackluster when compared to the GOATs, no real teamwork like Deep Rock, Payday 2, or Killing Floor. Bulwark is the only team-oriented one with his armor regenerating banner, but you guess it he's melee with a pistol....so boring

All this to say this is the difference between playing a game only with your friend and for 60 hours vs. playing for hundreds of hours with randoms.

The game is not a 6/10 like PC Gamer gave it, it's a solid 7/10 game
This is what I wanted Boltgun to feel like. Seriously the combat feels great and powerful :)

As long as I explain why my like or dislike for a game is made clear, my goal was met. We all have different reasons we play and enjoy certain games( sometimes I go too harsh on certain genres *cough* rogue-likes *cough*). Glad to see it helps you make an informed decision:steamhappy:
