Assassin's Creed Rogue. Another sloppily placed card in the house of AC titles that lie underneath it. Released alongside Assassin's Creed Unity, Rogue was the last title released on the seventh generation of consoles, and also the last game with a storyline that takes place on the American continents. You play as Shay Patrick Cormac, an Irishman with a wonderfully monotonous persona, who clearly has never seen a comb or brush in his life. At some point in Shay's extensively detailed background and history that the game totally lays out for you, he joins the Assassin Brotherhood, and our story begins shortly thereafter.

Now that I've prefaced things, I can move on to say what I really think of this game. It's unapologetic filler. Seriously, playing through this title gave me AC: Revelations flashbacks; a short, dull story with a plethora of collectibles and a few new gimmicky gameplay mechanics thrown into the mix. Shay serves merely as a plot device to describe the events leading up to AC3 and to give context to the beginning of Unity. His character is entirely an afterthought and is supported by the fact that he is nonexistent in any of the events that occur in AC3. And to those who say this game has let them see the Templars in a new light, I have to say that is disingenuous, at best. Since AC3, the writers have had this love affair with making both the templars and assassins morally ambiguous, to the point where the player can easily be swayed one way or the other with minimal effort. But hell, even Altair questioned the morals of the targets he was killing, so maybe this has been a return to form in some way.

To answer the burning question, do I think this game is worth playing? In short the answer is no, don't waste your time. All of the events that transpire in this game are utterly irrelevant, with the exception of the ending, or I guess if you are dying to know why Achilles walks with a limp in AC3. To sum it up another way, it's like working a job in retail. For some, they have convinced themselves that the daily grind is simply just more work to be done. Someone has to do, so it might as well be you because it's better than nothing. But for others, the never ending workload is conflated with the expectation of getting everything done in a timely manner, followed by the slow descent into madness as you feel everything you've done so far isn't good enough and it becomes demoralizing. So you aspire to move on to bigger and better things. That's this game.
