Start on the harder difficulties for best results - Kyn is a solid, traditional aRPG that demands tactical thought and proper positioning of your warriors... for the first few hours. Invest a little time in crafting, and you'll soon outmatch your foes, zerging your way to the end. Go easy on the gear, however, and it's a beautiful, varied piece of work (with a stonking soundtrack) that packs a few genuine innovations of its own. Whatever charm its pixels might tout, cumbersome user interface design, gruelling fetch quests, swarms of bugs and the near-unimportance of space travel mean that Interstellaria lags far behind Faster Than Light. Full review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHS9iYHI3kY

Pillars of Eternity is riddled with irksome flaws from dodgy AI pathing that should have stayed in the '90s to a story which sometimes offers only an illusion of choice.

Not one of these flaws undermine what is the deepest, most personal adventure to grace the genre in many years. Obsidian's writing is on form; the combat's vast array of strategic options deeply satisfying. Whether you're a life-long Infinity fan or you've never so much as seen a cRPG, Pillars is a quest which everyone should attempt. Here's to many more.

Although Might and Delight have produced a truly enthralling landscape with a self-confident visual identity, they haven't filled it with anything that recalls the grounded animal behaviour of Shelter 1. Where they do abstract threats to fit the intellect of a lynx, it telegraphs poorly, often leaving you clueless as to why you've been punished.

A real pity - Shelter 2 had the potential to be not just a stunning sequel to the first, but a fresh entry in the survival genre, which is more commonly about death than life. Instead, it feels as though M&D misjudged what made the first game great.

Having no RL mates with Evolve to team up with, I was concerned about what I might encounter in pubs. Multiplayer games live and die by their community, so, to see what proportion of players were friendly and what was, er, less so, I interviewed people in a series of thirty games. What I've found makes me feel that Evolve just isn't set up to promote the teamwork necessary to make asymmetric multiplayer fun for more than a few rounds. Unless you've a good bunch of friends lined up to play with, I'd pass.

Greek key the cars of gods and men! As educational as it is entertaining, Apotheon makes for a playable primer on Greek mythology. While the default difficulty does disservice to considered combat, jack it up to Champion and those four years of development begin to feel justified. Full review:

While not bad by any means, mechanically we've seen it all before, and though its subject matter is fresh and well written, Swagabyte don't quite succeed in packing it into a platformer. Full review here:

After only a short time in Mechs & Mercs, it's fair to say I've had my fill. Despite borrowing broadly from famous RTSes and some neighbouring genres too, unreliable controls and questionable balance choices undermine most attempts at strategy. Full review here:

Early Access Review
Sterling attention to detail and a nuanced approach to micromanagement that puts Sim City to shame, although the addition of tech, missions and tooltips in the coming months will be more than welcome.
