Update: While we have forced change from Sony, who was forcing this upon us and the narrative hasn't been written in stone as to whether this was always the case or something Sony forced at the last minute to try and garner some new accounts, i will point out that Sony willingly sold this game in 170 countries where you wouldn't have been able to access the game if PSN was a hard and fast requirement. Whether that means Sony intended to fraudulently sell people a 4 month trial of a game they would be locked out of or decided last minute that they were fine removing the vast majority of people in the world from being able to access the game to get some Americans to sign up for PSN, the world may never know.
