Why would I want to play a game with messages that not even its own writers believe in?

There are some mixed opinions on this game due to not having many horror elements as the first game and taking a dive into heavy steampunk themes and straying further away from the dark, evil mysticism the original had.

I personally think that this game took everything that the first game did well and refined it even further. This to me is the absolute peak of stealth games. Almost each mission is absolute masterclass in level design and ingenuity, really testing the limit of the player's capability to traverse the map and stay hidden from enemies.

Gameplay wise, it's identical to the first game with a few quality of life improvements and new items. Just like the first game, I still absolutely recommend this gem to anyone who's even remotely interested in stealth games or even just slower paced exploration games.

Thief: The Dark Project is a stealth game in its purest form. It's a bit rough around the edges given the year it was released, but it has everything that makes a stealth game great and set a gold standard for action-stealth games at the time. It birthed mechanics that would be seen in many games like it for years to come. There are a lot of intricate details in the mechanics, sound, and level design in this game that greatly adds to the overall gameplay experience.

There are no crutches, there are no magic teleportation or invisibility spells, and there's no "thief" vision that lets you see enemies through walls. The game heavily encourages you to rely on all of your sense to traverse through the level and avoid enemies. And that's what makes this game a masterpiece in the genre it almost completely defined by itself.

An absolute bedrock of a title and my all-time favorite immersive sim. The UI and clunky controls are daunting at first and there's definitely a learning curve that comes with it. But after getting past all of that, it's an incredible and rewarding experience to play through and beat this monster of a game.

There's a lot of aspects that haven't aged well, but there's also a surprising amount that does hold up. If you're at all interested in retro shooters or survival horror games. I'd say at least give this one a shot.

Went in for mind bending, reality breaking puzzles.

Came out looking at my life from a whole new perspective and understanding the mistakes I've made so I can avoid them in the future.

Neat little puzzle game with a nice message at the end.
