Still a very good looking and immersive game, the Hunter COTW was released back in 2017 and has had made steady improvements ever since. It’s one of those games that’s very easy to drop back into after a break away and you realize it’s been too long. It’s not without its bugs. I put up with an annoying UI glitch for a long time, but in 2023 after years of updates, the game seems pretty flawless and with about a dozen maps and plenty of DLC available the content is endless.

It’s a simple premise… venture out into a simulated wilderness and hunt animals for their trophy value. If you like to play first-person shooters this may all sound very quaint…and boring (It sat in my library a while before I finally installed it). But there is something about it that really triggers your caveman DNA. Even though there is nobody shooting back at you, it is not without its perils. I have been torn to shreds by angry lions, trampled to death by wild boar and actively hunted by large wolves in the night.

It has to be said that this game is ridiculously easy to play online with friends and if they are playing a map you don’t own, that’s no problem either. You just ‘join game’ right from your steam friends list and you are quickly dropped into whatever reserve they are hunting in. No matter what DLC you may or may not have, creating a multi-player server is child’s-play. Password or public.

You can buy the base game cheaply on steam and further DLC is just a few bucks a throw when on sale, making it all very affordable entertainment. As DLC goes, I highly recommend getting the Yukon valley reserve first as it has pretty cool single player missions (cash rewards + XP) and adds the .300 magnum bolt-action rifle which will likely become your go-to big game rifle in most reserves.
