This game "used" to be good. Let me explain.

It started out as a game for players who wanted a hardcore, difficult, clunky (thanks to the 19th century setting) FPS experience. Patch after patch has introduced extremely unbalanced weaponry and some common-sense balance modifiers are completely absent, creating an incredibly repetitive and stale competitive arena (i.e sniping with no bullet drop, minimal weapon sway and no hold-breath mechanism). That's the long range weapons out of the way.

The compact ammo received several major buffs including more damage, further effective range, special traits that increase rate of fire, and dual wielding can also be included in this. Shotguns also received buffs via tighter spread, slug ammo and further effective range.

The result of all these changes? You will rarely get into one of those awesome iron-sight, clunky western shootouts that made this game so special. You will however, die to shotguns and snipers (read: campers) that you never got chance to see, never mind take a shot at.

Essentially, the long ammo iron-sight loadout has become obsolete, which is in my opinion is the most skill-reliant loadout in the game due to the "make your shot count" factor that this loadout brings, and the long effective range allows you to get some headshots that you would think were impossible, if not thanks to your fine-tuned skills. Unfortunately, those amazing iron-sight headshots are easily trumped by snipers in this game (see above) and any close range fights will see you lose to shotguns, winnies, levering, dual wielding in a heart beat (also, see above). The cost of this loadout also reflects it's original potency as the "go-to, all-rounder" loadout, however, despite the buffs to the other weapons (which drastically reduced the effectiveness of this loadout), the cost of this loadout has remained the same which will see you lose money quickly, especially if you like to prestige like myself.

Unfortunately, the long ammo iron-sight loadout has become a waste of time and no longer enjoyable - and selling out to an overperforming sniper or shallow, repetitive, unpredictable close range weaponry does not fit in with where I believe this game should be heading nor do I want to encourage such ez-mode seeking behaviour.

Other major problems include the increasingly buggy nature of the game, i.e random stutters (despite ingame FPS reporting 100+ FPS) and major hit registration issues. These problems have become drastically worse with no improvement over the last year or so despite being acknowledged by the developers.

The direction this game is heading in seems to be influenced by quantity (read: DLC/copies sold) over quality, hence the drastic changes this game has seen. The good old days are over - find another game old timers.

Nice review. I wish they would remove Akimbo from hunt and slugs. I would like to see sniping with jump and bullet drop, and no hold-breath mechanism would good. If I am couched and controlling my breathing I don't sway and if I have just ran 1 km and aim standing I sway a lot and can't control my breathing well. Then moving as I am in down sight and not swaying is almost impossible.

Well said mate. This game has become an absolute joke. Bring back the early days! The new cheesy 10 year old character animations and newly added revive trait is the nail in the coffin for me. May as well be Fortnite now.

Shenzi, you are not an alpha player so you don't have the experience to comment - the weapon progression on this game is short > medium > long.. the game used to cater to the idea that as you level up, you should start using the better weapons and ditch the old... now all weapons are extremely effective but long ammo weapons are still very expensive. Please explain what your problem is. I am advocating for less spammy/shotgun/ez snipe kills and more iron sight, well aimed, precision gun fights - before all the changes I listed in my review, that's what this game was about and that's why people told their friends to buy into it.
