I love the game and recommend it fully, it is great fun and i really love it. That being said, not being able to unlock characters in online multiplayer is pretty upsetting for me. When i played the first game as a kid my favourite part was unlocking new characters and trying to be the first one to pick it before the other locks it in. The online feels too disconnected from normal play in my opinion, i can see how it would be designed like that when queuing for randoms, but it's really disappointing to have to downgrade to a worse experience just to play with my friends. The menu feels worse, and you can't access the village or short cuts. They are very small knit-picks, but i still find it disappointing.
