I would not have recommended this at all on the initial launch.
After loosely following the updates for a while, I recently bought the game.

It is absolutely worth it now. Between the initial release and now, the same sort of explorer premise still remains.
The game now has many additions and much much more content which leaves you wanting to progress further and further.

There is a story line to follow, however everything in this game (including the story) is optional.
Once you have your first ship, you can go and do anything you want for as long as you want.

No Man's Sky has definitely turned into a game which you cannot stop playing. You will never have nothing to do or be sat around "bored".

It has slow motion walking.
