Arkham City is the sequel to Arkham Asylum and takes places several months after the events of the game. You play as Batman in the Arkham City, which is a section of Gotham city that has been roped off by the government and filled with all its villains to run around and do whatever they want while “imprisoned”. Unlike the first game you get to fight several more iconic villains from the series and the story is much more involved than the first game. The combat has also been improved dramatically so it flows much smoother and you have several gadgets that you can use during combat.
While the main story is good the side content is lacking. Most of the side mission amount to running around the map looking for items until you find enough to fight a boss. It honestly starts to become a chore after a while, especially finding all the Riddler trophies which feel like a massive time sink for no real reward other than for the sake of completion.
The game also features a DLC pack where you play as Catwoman in her own unique story and while she has a different play style it’s not as fun to play as her and it’s a hassle to travel around since she’s much slower at getting around. There is also a pack where you play as Robin after the events of Arkham City, which is much more fun, even though you play as Batman for more of it than Robin.
Overall this is my favorite game in the entire Arkham series. The story is interesting, the combat flows well and getting around the map is fun. While the side stuff is lacking most of my complaints are tiny nitpicks and don’t really affect the overall game and it’s still a great game. The DLC isn’t bac to play if you really like the game but you can skip it and not miss much. I do recommend playing the first game before this one since the events of the original heavily influence the sequel.
