Other than Halo on Xbox, this was my first introduction to first person shooters, and boy did I enjoy the hell out of this game.

It was a late introduction in 2003 or 2004 for me, but after borrowing my friend's disc, Quake III Arena's awesome mix of violent gameplay, Gothic architecture, and cyberpunk aesthetics quickly made FPS my favorite game genre.

If you're feeling nostalgic, just go ahead and get it and get your nostalgia fix in for the day. If you haven't ever played Q3, maybe you won't understand what makes the game so great, but it's a quintessential shooter to play if you want to understand the roots of the FPS genre.
