-1-Never buy into hype or gorgeous graphics. Anyone can advertise a highly attractive game without spending crucial quality time it takes to make high-quality game. Star Wars, Star Trek, and the medieval theme have all been abused in their attraction. And most of them were all flash and no fun.
-2-The spine of any game is the core game play. It's all built up from the foundations. The game should be developed with the mechanics made first. You can stick fancy glitter over it all you want, but if the core foundation is loose, there'll be no game to show for it.
-3-Good balance and progression is what makes a game fair and fun. There must never be an unfair advantage between players. All the results a player must reach should be won by the player's growing skill and knowledge. Irresponsible developers will cut time, cost, and quality in their game by giving OP tools to the player that lets them win more. The player will never grow. He will never learn. He will stay the same.
