Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman announced on Thursday afternoon that a jail trustee, who had volunteered for and was working in a work detail, collapsed with possible heat exhaustion at about 10:30 Wednesday morning, and died Thursday morning in a Beaumont hospital.
Newman has identified the inmate as Joel Parker, and jail arrest report records indicate that he was 26-year-old and had a Jasper address. Newman also said that he had been jailed on charges of credit card abuse and probation violation.
According to Newman, Parker had been volunteering to work for the last two months and had been cleaning up parts of Jasper County.
Newman said an autopsy has been ordered, and the Texas Rangers will be investigating the case.
