Did they ever fix the crash to desktop bug?

I used to play this game a lot but it always suffered from a bug that would cause the game to randomly close itself to desktop during gameplay. From what I remember, there was some kind of known memory leak bug that was eventually unavoidable when playing long enough. Does anyone know if that issue ever got addressed in this version?
