Trimps either has the world's most tragically misleading opening week, or it simply is just:


...which is a shame, since otherwise it's competently made and has several good takes on Quality of Life features.


I've played a lot of true idle games and semi-idle games, both good and bad, simple and complex, funny and dry. And almost all of them had at the very least an interesting opening that had me interested to play more - even if it eventually turned out into disappointment and irritation.

Trimps utterly fails in this regard. You unlock few very straightforward mechanics, and then you keep getting either numerical increase after numerical increase, or a new purchase that has a better cost-benefit ratio.

You've got 11 types of equipment, that's actually... just 3 types of equipment, but 2 of those types are split into five identical items which differ only on cost-benefit ratios. UI highlights each of the five that gives the most bang for the buck, and there's no reason to do anything else.

Equipment also has an annoying feel-bad "tier-up" mechanic. Normally you purchase item levels with resources generated by your economy, but - in a slightly orthogonal progression of Maps - you obtain separate purchases that change, say, Dagger II into Dagger III (which has, you guessed it, much better cost-benefit ratio). Unfortunately, not only you get these in completely predetermined order from worst item to the best item; but also tier-ups just flush all the levels down the toilet. It doesn't matter whether you had lvl 1 Dagger II or lvl 12 Dagger II, you're getting lvl 1 Dagger III either way. Potential interactions between levels and tiers could have allowed for some gameplay choice or unorthodox strategies, but there are none - which, once again, reinforces a complete lack of agency when it comes to equipment.

And when you unlock the very first prestige mechanic, it... also offers just a whole bunch of incremental numerical increases. And the tutorial advises you that the most optimal move is to spread your Prestige Points across everything equally.

You go on, and on, and on, but after every turn it's just very basic new addition or distinctions without difference.


I'm not saying that all of the humour of the game are just "puns" of smashing <word> + "imp"... but none other attempts at humour made me smile. And the plot- and worldbuilding-so-far sits in this gray area that I can't tell whether it's supposed to be a thin window dressing in service of the game, or a surreal humoresque.

Cookie Clicker had a plot twist and Tellurium's Wall Destroyer had an ominous buildup while still making jokes about "pro-gamer 360 noscope" 1337-5p34king kiddies. <sigh>

Why is there a guy with 20k+ hours on this game 😭 good game though. Would recommend. But be advised it will consume you like any other incremental.

If you like idle games you need to play this, it is the best one bar none. Every time you think you know all the mechanics you bust through to another layer.
