EDIT: Use this script to make NPC combat drones to guard your ship!

Simply put a remote control module (facing the direction you want to be forward) on a ship with engines facing every direction, gyroscope and a power source.

All you have to do to turn a ship into a drone (Assuming you have the mod below installed) that will follow your ship (or stay near your station) and engage any hostiles that show up is change the name of the remote control to:

Remote Control [ G NameOfShipToGuard : E 1000 ]

Obviously type the name of the ship you want to guard after G, and the number after E is the engagement range of the drone. In this case, it engages at 1000 meters, but I've seen it track targets about 10 km away, so set it to whatever you like. Set E to 0 if you want it to engage at infinite range.

The drones will automatically return to your ship/station after they are finished with the target (may require antenna contact?), and are actually pretty good at avoiding collisions with friendlies from what I've seen so far. You can even give them instructions on how to land/reattach apparently, but I've only just started messing with them.

Anyway, the reason I'm posting this is because I saw a few comments on this ship that were asking about it, so hopefully you guys see this and check it out.

I haven't really messed around with formation stuff yet, but I've had a blast turning ships into kamikaze drones in creative mode.
