What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Book of Travels is in Early Access because it’s a living project and a way for us to involve our community in shaping the world of Braided Shore – as well as partly fund the studio during development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We plan to be in Early Access for around 2 years, a period we call “Chapter Zero”.
Full release will mark the start of “Chapter One”. It will be available once we have added the features, stories and changes we envision the final game to have. The game must become smoother”with better flow for us to deem it ready for full release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Full release is a state of quality and stability, but it will also mark a difference in the amount of content. We will add everything from new areas and gameplay features to small convenience tweaks.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently the game includes the core gameplay elements, but it needs further stability and polish. Most of all, we believe the experience needs more things to explore. We hope that players can see our ambition and to feel the direction that we are headed towards in the current game.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. We plan to gradually raise the price when we do large updates to the game.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Book of Travels was born as a Kickstarter project and our dedication to our community is everything. We aim to have an active dialogue via our Discord Server and the Steam forums. We also take different forms of input from the community via an in-game menu that ends up on our public Trello board.”

Reviews

“First Impressions: In its favor, Book of Travels offers a voice that’s as unique and artistic as any you hope to find in this space. It’s a whole lot of creatively different, from its pace to its interactions, and that’s very refreshing when coming from a raft of combat-centric MMOs. The art is like moving through a world of watercolors, and the language is airy and poetic. I certainly enjoy the slower pace and the sensation of going where I whim.”

“Book of Travels convinced me I can still love MMOs as long as they're tiny”
PCgamer

“Book of Travels Review: Is It Worth Playing in 2024? If you’re looking for an immersive, relaxing MMO to play, Book of Travels might be right for you. With beautiful graphics, a rich soundscape and non-traditional gameplay elements, Book of Travels is a new way to experience an online RPG.”

About This Game

Ready your pack, grab your walking stick and step into a world of mystery and legend. Craft a unique character and immerse yourself in the enchanted lands of Braided Shore. Set your own goals and adventure alone or together with Travellers you meet on the road. Book of Travels is a serene adventure that sets you adrift in a fairytale world without the restraints of linear missions and plotlines.

Book of Travels is all about the journey, not the destination. Explore the wilds and visit the cities of the Braided Shore peninsula. Wander deep into the layers of this hand-drawn world, stumble upon its hidden places or unravel its many mysteries. There is no overarching goal and no real beginning or end.

Braided Shore is a vast and intricate world, but meetings with other players are few and far between, so your chance encounters will be something special. Choose to collaborate with other players or to survive alone.

But take note: This is a game for wayfinders and wanderers and your route is not pre-destined. Instead, it will be up to you to play in your own style and to shape your own journey. Whichever way you choose to travel, you’ll soon be adding your own chapters to Book of Travels.

  • Roleplaying and individual playstyles
Pick one of 20+ Forms in a detailed character creation sheet that focuses on personality and identity rather than stats and classes. The game allows you to play in a style that matches your character and set your own personal goals. Are you a danger-seeking adventurer, a stoic practitioner of magic binding, or a carefree tea drinking gambler?

  • A narrative that won’t hold your hand
Your travels will present you with randomly occurring events making your story unique and each session different from the last. Peel back the layers of diverse plotlines and discover a deep fairytale world.

  • TMO – Tiny Multiplayer Online
Other players are few, but your paths will cross – it’s up to you to choose to travel together or go it alone. Find vehicles to reach far flung places or just amble through woods together. The absence of guilds and social structures makes your temporary fellowships unique and memorable.

  • A beautiful world of uncertainty
An intricate and unique world that draws inspiration from old-world fairytales, Eastern mythologies and early industrial eras. Intricate event chains unlock items, characters, deep world secrets, and hidden gameplay features and tricks.

  • Communicate using symbols
Learn to use a unique set of symbols to communicate with other players. Unlock new symbols as you encounter new features and places (e.g. you’ll gain the symbol for “city” only after you’ve visited a city). The limitation in communication lays the foundation for a friendly multiplayer experience.

  • Innovative RPG systems
Define your character by unlocking and mastering 300+ abilities, magical skills and passive feats that will have a huge impact on your character and open different experiences of the game. Gain experience in numerous ways: by exploring, being courteous, gathering and trading. Battles can be rewarding, but you will learn more in defeat than in victory.

  • The world is a hand painted diorama
Experience a unique game view perspective ‘painted’ in a richly detailed art style. Click to walk like old school RPGs, but in scenes with 3-dimensional depth.

Quotes:

Book Of Travels' online cRPG world may be the cure for my break-up with MMOs
"I believe [creative director Jakob Tuchten] understands, and maybe relates to, why I've broken up with MMOs, which is why I have faith (and even ten hours in, it is still faith) that Book Of Travels is the match I'd been waiting for.
" - Rock, Paper, Shotgun

Book of Travels Preview: Building Folklore In Multiplayer

"Book of Travels creates a unique take on the multiplayer experience, with an atmospheric and beautiful game made for smaller groups of players." - ScreenRant

"Feels like a Shakespearean sonnet written in code – a love letter to a genre that's become diluted with vapid quests, superficial choices and ostentatious combat.
" - Edge magazine

Awards

Massively OP’s 2019 Awards: Most Anticipated MMO

”Book of Travels, the only game on Kickstarter I backed all year. I was dead serious when I said I wanted to play something weird and unique, something that pushes the boundaries of what MMOs are supposed to be, and it helps that it’s super pretty too.” – Brianna Royce

Massively OP’s 2020 Awards: Most Anticipated MMO

”Book of Travels was the game that stole my heart in 2019 with its Kickstarter campaign and wildly different and creative premise. A serene MMO? Sure, I’m up for that!” – Justin Olivetti
