LucasArts released a demo of TIE Fighter in early 1994. This demo was based on an unfinished build of the game and has some unique features as a result. It consists of just one long mission in a TIE Fighter against various Rebellion forces. The cockpit is not the same as that in the final game, sound effects are different, and the soundtrack is from Star Wars: X-Wing.

The demo was sponsored by Dodge and displayed a Neon car advertisement before the gameplay began. It came on two 3.5" 1.44MB floppy disks. The demo announced the game's release date as "Spring 1994" but it wasn't released until July.

The Demo version of TIE Fighter was featured again in Version 1 of the 1995 Chrysler/Plymouth Virtual Plaza from Shamrock Communications along with 5 other Demos: 3 Davidson for Kids Titles (Reading Blaster Jr, the Blaster Series Previews & Magic Tales), Afterlife & Mortimer and the Riddles of the Medallion. The Demo Disc also incudes the Chrysler/Plymouth Virtual Auto Plaza Hub which allows to you view your favorite cars from Chrysler/Plymouth Car Companies & see how they're built.

I was never a fan of the Doge Neon, but I'd fancy a Tie Fighter Demo Disk any day.
Interesting obscure piece of gaming history.

Yes there was a Dodge Neon ad as you have posted as the main screen when you 1st started the demo. If I recall the ad made you wait a short time before you could begin the game. Mildly annoying but worth it.

I bought this demo at a dollar store's software tree display in late 1995, paying $4 to buy both the disks. The mission occured in space near Hoth as the Rebels were attempting to evacuate. Your game started with one having to destroy a Corelian Gunship, then intercepting and blasting 4 key freighters. After that you went after any other large Rebel ships and then started on the X-Wings and A-Wings in the general area. If you survived all that then you were given a chance to shoot and destroy the Rebel pilot " Wedge " who was in an A-Wing. Quite the task in a basic Tie Fighter. The whole mission took about 2 hours ( I kid you not ) and could end at any moment with a couple of lucky hits on your Tie. Frankly I only every completed the whole mission a handful of times, getting the " The Emperor will be pleased message! " as my reward. A fantastic deal for my $4 investment and good training for my future! Some great memories of myself and my friends all competing to beat the mission too.
