Yeah, theres a Hire Ninjas event that you can use that makes spies awesome, but i guess i could use the claim action to grab some cores, then pinch them for lower infamy and then annex them later. I might give it a shot at some point.

Yes, diplo and size matter. You have to demand vassalization in war, maybe you need to do two or three wars to grab first some territory and after take the vassalization. Use spies to lower the infamy for the war! I don't remember well (this is my only game as japan) but there is a decision that increase the spy efficiency. Shogunate also help. PU works better.

Yeah, but isnt "Demand Vassalisation" and "Demand Annexation" success chance based on how strong you are compared to them? Since we are equal, they would never accept it unless i had 90 diplo or something. I know that as France (Who was controling the better part of europe) even OSM nations wont accept into Vassalisation - it rates as impossible - and i can only demand annexation on nations ive vassalised by war if they have only a few provinces - less than about 8 - and only if my diplo is about 12, through spreading of influence.

I guess i could force the other states into vassalisation, but wont the war cost be too high? Even if i take all their provinces the cost for vassalisation would still be ~140 i think.

You need vassalization/personal union. The simple "conquer all" doesn't work well

I just have trouble uniting japan. I mean, i can take about 5 provinces before infamy just screws me over and millions of rebelions happens and i just give up.

Thank you! It was difficult to unite and westernize Japan and i finished around 1600. Ming it wasn't so hard, rebellion in the mid game help me a lot.
