Myths of MvM

There are lots of secrets about MvM that many people do not know about. In this guide, we will go through a list of Myths that happen in MvM and prove whether they are confirmed or busted.

Introduction
As an MvM veteran, I am always looking for any secrets in my favorite game mode: Mann VS Machine. I first started playing it when it first came out. I have over 100 total tours in mann up mode, have made my own MvM map using the hammer editor(Which will be the map where my clips are shown), and have made custom missions for some of the current maps. This guide will explain the myths for each section and then at the end, it will show video clips for myths for each class. I could just put it all in 1 video but I find that won't explain as much and people won't watch the whole thing. If you guys want me to, I can add all the clips together in 1 video at the end but don't expect it at the initial release of this guide. There are 3 statuses for myths: Busted, Confirmed, and Undetermined. Busted means that the myth is not true. Confirmed means that the myth is true. Finally, undetermined means that the myth can go both ways depending on the situation. Finally, I'd like to thank Artimits for helping me with the videos in this guide. We spent over 3 hours doing myths and this could not be possible without his help.
Scout Myths
Myth: Baby Faces Blaster speed stacks with movement speed upgrade.

Status: Busted
If you have full boost, there is no need to get movement speed at all; which can help you save some cash on the upgrade. But since the nerf to the Baby Face's Blaster, it is no longer good at all since taking damage loses your boost.

Myth: Milked non-scout giants move slow with upgrade.

Status: Somewhat Confirmed
It is not much noticeable but the movement speed of giants is already slow. In the video, the giant pyro moves slightly slower when he is milked. This still could use more tests.

Myth: Sandman can stun giant robots.

Status: Confirmed
Using the sandman, you can stun robots with the baseball. At maximum distance (which is called a moonshot) the robot will be stunned for 7 seconds. This also applies to giants robots. If you hit them at maximum distance they will be stunned and can't shoot or move. They will start jumping after a while because there is no stun animation for giants.

Myth: Sandman or Fan O'War can mark for death more than 1 robot at a time.

Status: Busted
You can only mark 1 robot at a time even with the baseball or swinging the bat.

Myth: With shortstop out, you can get more health from cash.

Status: Confirmed
The 20% healing bonus on the Shortstop applies to cash as well. So remember to have this out when you want to collect cash.

Myth: The Atomizer's 3rd jump takes less damage to use with resistances.

Status: Confirmed
Bullet resistance decreases damage taken from the 3rd jump.


Use full screen to get the best out of the videos.
Soldier Myths
Myth: The airstrike max clip size crits does more damage than max beggar's bazooka clip size.

Status: Confirmed
You do 540 * 11 with the beggar's and you do 459 * 16 with the Airstrike. Do the math, which barrage does more damage. But this is just for one clip. Overall, the beggar's is a lot better since you can spam continuous rockets.

Myth: Upgrading a backpack weapon increases range of buff.

Status: Busted
Upgrading the Buff Banner does not increase its range of the buff.

Myth: Direct hit fully upgraded does more damage per hit than rocket launcher with fully upgraded damage.

Status: Busted
Actually each rocket from the Direct Hit and Rocket Launcher both do the same amount of damage. But the Rocket Launcher still has more splash damage.

Myth: The Direct Hit's rocket moves faster than the Rocket Launcher with both at full rocket specialist upgrade.

Status: Confirmed
I thought there was a cap on the speed but there was not. The Direct Hit travels faster than the Rocket Launcher so that means it can go faster with rocket specialist.

Myth: The charged shot wastes all of the Cow Mangler's 5000 clip size no matter how many upgrades it has.

Status: Confirmed
When you used the charged shot, it depletes all the ammo in the gun. That is why it is not good to get clip size upgrades if you are going to be using the charged shot often.



Pyro Myths
Myth: Getting jump height with pyro can make you jump higher when you use the scorch shot or detonator to jump.

Status: Confirmed
More jump height means higher scorch or detonator jumps. Keep that in mind when you want to jump around the map as a pyro.

Myth: Airblasting the sentry buster is good.

Status: Undetermined
This is a mixed bag. It is usually not advised to do it unless the medic wants some hits with his ubersaw or the heavy wants to charge up his rage or the soldier to get some rage for his buff banner. Personally as pyro, I only do it once so the engineer is ready to move is sentry away. If the engineer is dead, I do it if there are no robots in the area.

Myth: Pyro with 3rd Degree can replace a demo or sniper to take out medics.

Status: Somewhat Busted
In order to kill all the medics that are attached to a giant, you need to do enough damage to kill them all in 1 hit or they will uber. This means getting a crit canteen or get lucky with a random crit. Plus if the giant is a heavy or soldier, they might killed you before you can hit it. If there are a lot of medics attached to a giant, they will overheal each other and a critical hit can make them pop uber. It is way to situational and is not recommended unless the players in the party are skilled.

Myth: Airblast force upgrade affects giants.

Status: Confirmed
Getting airblast force affects giants. It blasts them back further than with no blast force. It's a cheap upgrade so always get it first.

Myth: 4 firing speed upgrades with a flare related gun is better than 2 reload speeds.

Status: Confirmed
Both fire at the same speed but 4 firing speeds cost $400 but 2 reloads cost $500. So get firing speed first.

Myth: Burn time upgrade is better than Burn damage.

Status: Busted
Burn damage kills them faster than burn time. Burn time can be useful if you want to spam flare gun critical hits but burn damage is overall better.

Myth: Resetting the bomb is better than killing the bomb carrier.

Status: Undetermined

This depends on where the bomb is. It is best to keep the bomb away from the hatch. If the bomb has a reset timer already, it is best not to blast it back because it will reset anyway. If the bomb is near a pit or cliff, wait for a small bot to get it and blast it back. If you just keep killing it, a giant might pick it up and progress further. If the way is near the end, it isn't really necessary to blast it back because it will reset when you clear the wave.


Demoman Myths
Myth: Sticky Traps do more damage to tanks if they are on the tracks of the tank rather than the center.

Status: Confirmed
Even though it is hard to believe, sticky traps on the tracks of a tank deal more damage. It is only about 22% more damage but that is still something to keep in mind.

Myth: The grenade launcher is better than the sticky bomb launcher against tanks.

Status: Confirmed
It cost more to upgrade and has less max ammo, but it still can deal more damage per second than stickys.

Myth: The loose cannon can knockback giants.

Status: Busted
Giants are too big to be knocked back at all.

Myth: It is easier to double donk giants.

Status: Confirmed
Giants have a huge hit box. You can easily double donk them with your cannonballs.

Myth: Getting a kill with the Half Zatoichi with health on kill upgrade does nothing.

Status: Busted
Getting health on kill can give you overheal whether you have low health or full health. The upgrade applies after you get the full health from the Half Zatoichi kill.

Myth: With a shield and resistances, you can take no damage from fire or explosions.

Status: Busted
With any shild and max resistances, you can still take damage from fire and explosions. It's reduced more but you are not 100% safe from rockets or fire.

Heavy Myths
Myth: Each firing speed upgrade for the Heavy gives the gun more damage per second.

Status: Somewhat Busted
One of the upgrades does not do anything unless you have the Tomislav and that is the 2nd upgrade. Both the 1st and 2nd upgrade on firing speed do the same DPS. Keep that in mind when upgrading firing speed as heavy.

Myth: Destroy projectiles 2 upgrade doesn't make a difference.

Status: Busted
The 2nd upgrade deals more damage against projectiles for them to be destroyed. One is just fine but having 2 can help with the spam of rockets and pipes.

Myth: Rage upgrade 2 and 3 doesn't make a difference.

Status: Somewhat Busted
In the video test, all 3 rage upgrades did the same thing. But I have had times where the rage lasted longer or took less time to charge or knocked them back further. There are multiple factors to that depending on range and the number of targets you are hitting. This still should have more tests.

Myth: The Tomislav does more DPS than the Natascha both with full firing speed.

Status: Confirmed
Yes the Tomislav is better at damage even though it has big downsides in firing speed.

Myth: The Holiday punch can stun robots if it crits them.

Status: Busted
In January of 2015, Valve fixed the Holiday Punch so it can not make robots laugh/get stunned on crits. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Myth: You take no damage from ranged sources when you have full resistances holding the Fists of Steel.

Status: Somewhat Busted
Even with full resistances, you still can take damage. With The Vaccinator ubercharge test, you can hardly take damage when you have them out.

Myth: You move faster while deployed if you get movement speed upgrade.

Status: Confirmed
Yes you can get the movement speed upgrade and you can move faster while deployed.

Myth: The Huo-Long Heater's ring of fire does damage to tanks.

Status: Busted
This fire damage only does damage to robots and not the tank.

Myth: The gloves of running urgently speed bonus and movement speed upgrade stack.

Status: Confirmed
As a heavy, your movement speed does stack with the GRU. So you can move super fast with them out.

Myth: You can send giants flying using Rage.

Status: Confirmed
When giants are in mid air, knockback rage can be insane. When you get under the giant and use rage, you will send it flying! They can take fall damage when they hit the ground causing major damage.
Engineer Myths
Myth: The sentry firing speed upgrade increase the DPS of the sentry.

Status: Busted
For a Level 3 sentry only, Only the first upgrade increases the damage. The next one only increases it when it is wrangled. And the third upgrade does nothing at all. So never get it. I am not sure about level 1 or 2 or mini sentries as of now. Those will need to be tested.

Myth: Robots do not notice a teleporter.

Status: Confirmed
The robots treat teleporters as friendly buildings. They don't even look or shoot at them unless someone is standing on it.

Myth: Giants can run over any building and blow it up instantly except a sentry gun.

Status: Confirmed
If a giant robot touches a building that is not a sentry(not mini), it will blow up instantly. A dispenser or a teleporter will explode as well as the mini-sentry if any giant touches it, even super scouts.



Myth: You can pick up a building through a sentry buster using the rescue ranger.

Status: Confirmed
You can pick it up but only through its legs, but you can't through its bomb body. So crouch and alt-fire to do that.

Myth: The short circuit can destroy baseballs and flares.

Status: Confirmed
Yes both of these can be destroyed with the short circuit.

Myth: Robot Spies can take/sap teleporters.

Status: Mostly Busted
I have never seen a spy take nor sap any teleporters I have built. Robot spies will never take/sap teleporters purposely, but they can do it my accident. Like if you body block one and have them stand on a teleporter, they will take it.

Myth: The Pomson 6000 is good against Uber Medics.

Status: Confirmed
The uber medics have a 100% increased ubercharge rate bonus and some have 500%. If you manage to hit the medic with the pomson, it will get its lost uber back fast. Shooting at them can buy your team some time to kill them before they regain all the uber lost. But don't risk your life trying to do it since the patient might kill you.

Myth: The Pomson 6000 is good against Giant Quick-fix Medics.

Status: Confirmed
Unlike the regular uber medics, the pomson 6000 can own against the giant medic bots. They have no uber charge rate bonus and they are huge targets so you can hit them easily. All it takes is 3 or 4 hits and that gives you about 30 seconds where they can't uber. The giant medics with the hats are even easier. The medics with hats do not even uber at all, so you don't have to shoot them. But always equip this gun on waves with giant medics.

Myth: The dispenser can give ammo through walls but not health.

Status: Confirmed
With the dispenser range upgrade, you can make the dispenser give ammo through walls but not health.


Medic Myths
Myth: The crusader's crossbow can passively reloads full clip with clip size upgrade

Status: Busted
Passively, it can only reload 1 bolt. You have to switch to the crossbow to reload the rest.

Myth: When you have the shield deployed, it still remains when switching weapons.

Status: Busted
If you have a shield out and you switch to a primary or a melee, you lose the shield but if you switch back to the medigun, you get it back. This was fixed a day after I released this guide.

Myth: With max ubercharge rate upgrades, all 4 medic guns take the same amount of time to get to full uber.

Status: Busted
The Vaccinator takes forever to get to full uber because of the nerf. The Quick-Fix takes the shortest and the stock Medigun and Kritzkreig are the same. Remember they charge faster if the patient is injured.

Myth: With max healing mastery upgrades, all 4 medic guns heal the exact same rate.

Status: Busted
The Quick-Fix heals the fastest, then the Vaccinator, then the Stock Medigun and Kritzkreig heal the same.

Myth: With max healing mastery upgrades, all 4 medic guns revive the exact same rate.

Status: Undetermined
Needs to be tested. But I am assuming it is the same order as healing.

Myth: With Projectile Penetration upgrade, the crusader's crossbow can heal multiple targets.

Status: Confirmed
You can heal multiple people using the crossbow with the upgrade. Just today, I saw the bolt go through a giant and heal a demo on the other side. So it can go both ways with healing and damage.


Sniper Myths
Myth: Explosive headshots can deal damage to tanks.

Status: Busted
This upgrade only applies to robots and not tanks.

Myth: Explosive headshots deal more damage fully charged.

Status: Busted
Quick scope or fully charged, the explosive headshot damage is the same.

Myth: Ammo refill canteen makes you a new Razorback.

Status: Busted
Ammo canteen doesn't give you a Razorback; However, the Recall canteen can!

Myth: The Machina is the only weapon that can deal 4 digit damage in 1 shot to 1 target.

Status: Confirmed
Not counting the backstab of a spy, which is an instant death on any small robot, the Machina can do 4 digit damage.

Myth: The Hitman's Heatmaker will more damage with a quick scope shot while in focus with fully upgraded charge rate.

Status: Confirmed
If you have fully upgraded the charge rate and are in focus and shooting with max reload speed, you can do a quick scope of 183 damage per headshot instead of 150.

Myth: The Sydney Sleeper can get more charge with max charge upgrade.

Status: Busted
It already has 25% charge rate increased and you can't go past 100% charge rate. So the 4th upgrade is useless.

Myth: The Bazaar Bargain can get heads from explosive headshot kills.

Status: Busted
You must get a kill with a headshot in order for it to count.

Myth: The Bazaar Bargain can charge super fast with max kills and charge rate upgrade.

Status: Busted
If you have max heads, charge rate upgrade won't do you any good at all. It is only good when you don't have any heads on your gun.

Myth: The Sydney Sleeper can do explosive headshots.

Status: Confirmed
Yes this gun will still do explosive headshots if you get a headshot. The main target will be jarated and dealt bodyshot damage and the enemies around him will take explosive headshot damage and be jarated.

Spy Myths
Myth: The sapper doesn't have to recharge when placed on a building.

Status: Somewhat Busted
In MvM, you can only have 1 sapper out at a time. So you can only have it on a building and once it is removed you can use it again.

Myth: Robot Engineers cannot remove the Red-Tape-Recorder sapper.

Status: Somewhat Busted
Robot Engineers are always repairing there sentry. But when you place the Red-Tape-Recorder on a teleporter, they will not remove it.

Myth: The armor piercing upgrade increases damage to giants on a backstab.

Status: Confirmed
You start at 188 damage and each upgrade increases it by that much up to 938 damage with max upgrades.

Myth: Robots notice you when you are jarated just like you are on fire.

Status: Confirmed
Yes the robots will notice you. In the video test, the sniper kept throwing it my way and the giant demo was launching pipes at me while I was jarated.

Myth: The duration of a robot being sapped increases with each upgrade.

Status: Somewhat Busted
The first upgrade just increases the range of the sapper to a small area of effect and not the duration. But upgrades 2 and 3 increase range and duration.

Myth: You can get a backstab with Your Eternal Reward and get a robot disguise.

Status: Confirmed!
I was surprised they fixed it! A while back, you couldn't get a disguise but now you can. Getting a kill pretty much just is a redisguise of the robot which takes 2 seconds. Meaning that when you backstab a robot, it takes that long to get your new disguise. So that means they could still notice you. It still is the worse knife but still you could challenge yourself on intermediate mode.

Myth: Health on kill upgrade with the kunai can get you up to 310 health.

Status: Busted
You can only get up to 210 health, which is the maximum. You can't go past that so health on kill upgrade with this weapon is pointless.


Miscellaneous Myths
These myths might be for all class things, or stuff that can doesn't go in specific class.

Myth: Refill canteens fully fill your bars for items that are consumable (sapper, ball, sandvich, E.T.C).

Status: Confirmed
Ammo canteens can refill recharge items like the sandman balls, spy's sapper, and Bonk! Atomic punch cooldown; however, it will not charge the medic's shield or heavy's rage or soldier's buffs.
Conclusion

Investigate whether the sniper can get explosive headshots if he uses a crit canteen and then noscopes the enemy's head. I hear it works on the classic and I think I've had it happen with the stock sniper rifle.

i only encountered 2 myths in MVM,both spy,sapping thetele with red tape recorder and they will not care,and if you sap the buildings it will need to recharge

Soda Popper with $3200 worth of upgrades (maxed out damage and clipsize) has ~400 DPS
