The Night Mode - First steps
The Night mode is the first gamemode you will unlock.
You can unlock it by reaching level 20 in a classic mode run. (This can be the classic run, the classic seeded run but also the daily run)

Once unlocked it stays unlocked and you can play it.

When started you will find yourself in a dungeon, just like you know it from the classic mode.
But some things are different.

1. It's dark. The level is darker, but not completely dark. You can still see everything, but it's darker than normal. Some torches may burn and bring light into the darkness.
But you glow too, at least a little bit.

2. You have a new item. The road flare. In the bottom left corner of the screen you can see how many flares you have and how many flares you can carry.

The goal of the game stays the same. Reach the portal, get as fast as you can.
The next few levels
Soon you will notice that the levels are getting darker. Already in level 6 the night is "pitch-black".
Now it's time to start using your road flares.

The road flare can be used by pressing your "Put TNT Away"-Key while not holding tnt.
(Default: Right Mouse Button)
While holding down this button you raise your road flare. Now you can throw the flare, you can hold it or you can put it on your back. You put it on your back by pressing the "Throw TNT"-Key while holding a flare. (Default: Left Mouse Button) To throw it just release the "Put TNT Away"-Key. (After thrown you can pick it up again if you want to)

When you put it on your back the flare is still burning and it can still spend you light. But when you hold your flare in the hands it's more effective (i.e. is brighter)
You can only hold one flare at a time. So if you want to activate another flare you will have to throw your current flare away. You can't pick up burning flares while already having a burning flare.

Okay, the next thing you will notice is that there appeared a new bar right next to your flare hud.

This bar indicates how long your flare will burn. Once it reaches the bottom the flare is empty and you will automatically drop it. Once empty it doesn't have any purpose anymore. You can't pick it up.

The flare fuel will get bruned up really quick. Without any upgrade a flare will burn for not even 2 minutes. Which is enough to complete 2 or maybe 3 levels. Maybe even more. But thats it.

That's why you should look for new road flares. You can find flares in the level. They spawn randomly in the grass, but most times they will be right under a sign. Sometimes you can't see them. But when you run over them there will appear a text that says "Press E to pickup" or something similiar. Then you know there was a flare. Go back and pick it up.
Flares sometimes spawn as a pile of flares. So it's not uncommon that there is another flare or even more right next to the flare.
What also happens is that a road flare is already burning. This helps because when you see a burning road flare you can go there and you will most times find a few additional flares next to it.
Another way to get flares is to get them as upgrades. But more to this in the next section.
The Upgrades
The night mode bring a few exclusive upgrades.

1. Better Night Vision
This Upgrade let the player see further wihout having to use flares. It's pretty useful and you should upgrade this at least once.

2.Brighter Road Flares
Yea, your road flares burn brighter. This upgrade can be useful, but your flares are pretty bright anyway.

3.More efficient flares
This upgrade is really useful, because every time you choose this upgrade the burn-length of your flares will increase by ~45 seconds, which is pretty much.
But this upgrade won't affect already ignited flares.

4.+ Max Flares
You can have more flares. One Upgrade increases the limit by 3. This upgrade is really useful.

5.+ 3 Flares
This upgrade gives you 3 flares. This upgrade should only be choosen if you really need some flares. Usually you will find enough flares in the levels. And if you choose this upgrade while having 4/5 flares you will only get 1 flare, therefore this upgrade is really only useful if you have no flares or if your flare maximum is already pretty high.

Additional tips
With the big update 1.2 explosions now create some fireparticles.
These little fires can spend light. So if you really don't have any flares left and it's dark you could try to throw an explosive. It's dangerous but could help you.

When you reach level 20 the coin mode will get unlocked.

If you experience lags/fps-drops, the cheat "mingraphics" could help you (The cheat will lower the graphic). To enter a cheat you will have to be in the main menu, and then just type the cheat with your keyboard. You will hear a sound.

Some color palettes are less useful for the night mode. Choose a color palette that has a bright fire.
The default palette is probably the best one. But my favorite is the "Dirt and Grass" palette.
Most palette are equally good. But some aren't as good because they are pretty dark. Therefore you should disable "random color palette every level" :D

To get the "Light speed" Achievement you will have to complete 4 pitch-black levels (> Level 5) with only one flare.
i.e. you have to jump into the portal 4 times with the same flare burning on you back or in your hands.
Don't throw it away.
For example you activate the flare right before entering a portal. Then you complete the next level, the level after this level and then the level after this one. Then you will unlock this achievement.

To get the "Let there be light" achievement you will have to ignite over 100 torches.
This does not need to happen in this gamemode but it's easier here because here you won't have to use tnt but you can just use a road flare. And this gamemode spawns more torches, therefore this achievement should be easiert here.
To ignite a torch you will have to hold your flare in your hands and then jump in front of a torch.
Just touch it and it will burn. To see how many torches you already ignited you can check the stats in the main menu.

That's it. Have fun!

The bigger the level the more torches will spawn. So in later levels there will be more torches than in earlier levels. I cant name a specific number

About how many non burning Torches will spawn on each level that are available for the player to light?
