Converting Items to Gems
You can convert Steam Community items such as trading cards, backgrounds and emoticons into a currency called "gems" to use at the Steam Holiday Auction. You can convert items into gems by visiting your Steam Inventory, selecting an item, and clicking the "Turn into Gems" button.

Before your item is converted you'll be asked to confirm your selection. You'll also be told how many gems you'll earn.

Once confirmed the gems will be credited to your account. The gems can then be used at the Steam Holiday Auction or they can be used to create trading card booster packs using the booster pack creator" tool.

Placing a Bid
Up for auction are a lot of games, software and the elusive holiday profile.

The first auction begins on December 15th at 06:45 PST. Every 45 minutes a new auction will begin up until December 18th at 21:00 PST. From the Steam Holiday Auction page you can filter through a large collection of titles for auction.

Once you've selected an item you'd like to place a bid on click on the "Place Bid" button. If you've already placed a bid on the item you can increase your maximum bid by selecting button again.

Put your maximum bid in the box and select the button. Steam will automatically increase your bid up to your specified amount to keep yours the highest bid.

Before your bid will be placed you'll need to review and confirm it.

You can cancel your bid as long as you're not the highest bidder by revisiting the auction detail page and selecting "Cancel Bid". Your bid will remain active until you've won or it has been cancelled. If you were not successful with winning a round your bid will carry over to the next.

If you win an auction you'll be notified via email and you'll receive a Steam notification giving you the option to add the item to your inventory or library.

Note that the Lv3 badge is worth 200 exp as well, instead of 300 (or 100 like it was some time ago).
