BYZANTINE LITURGIES
In the Byzantine rite, the Mass is called “the Divine Liturgy”.
There are currently three liturgies:
1) Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, which is celebrated
almost every day and whose translation we present
in this book.
2) Liturgy of St. Basil: This is the same as that of St. John
Chrysostom, with some more developed secret prayers, especially in the
developed, especially in the anaphora. This liturgy is
celebrated ten times a year: on the first five
Sundays of Lent, on Holy Thursday and Holy Saturday, on the first
Holy Saturday, the first of January, the feast of St. Basil, and
on the two vigils of Christmas and Epiphany.
3) Liturgy of the Pressantifices: like its counterpart
of the Roman rite, this liturgy is rather an office of solemn
solemn communion. In the Byzantine rite, it is not celebrated on
Good Friday, but on the days of Lent, with the
Saturdays and Sundays. Today, however, it is celebrated
only in cathedrals.

USEFUL EXPLANATIONS
1- The HOST of the sacrifice of the Mass is made of leavened bread, not unleavened bread.
not unleavened bread.
2- COMMUNION is given to the faithful under both species,
according to the constant usage of the Eastern Church. In the
the first centuries, the faithful received the holy host in the
the palm of their hand and drank from the common chalice. Even today, the
deacon receives communion in this way from the hands of the
priest celebrating, and the priest from the hands of the bishop
bishop. But in the communion of the faithful, the priest
takes from the paten a particle which he makes soak in the
precious blood and places it on the tongue of the communicant,
who can chew the wafer because it is made of fermented bread.
bread (but we advise against this) and
not easy to swallow, as in the Roman rite.
Roman rite. It should be noted that communion is received standing up.

3- METANIA is a more or less deep inclination
of the body, accompanied by the sign of the cross and expressing
a feeling of humility, adoration or penance.
penance. It replaces the genuflection of the Roman rite.

4- HOW TO MAKE THE SIGN OF THE CROSS the sign of the cross is made as follows
is made in the following way: by stretching out the three
fingers of the right hand (thumb, forefinger and middle finger) and
resting the other two (ring finger and little finger) on the
palm of the hand, we take the hand thus formed, from the
forehead to the chest and then from the right shoulder to the
shoulder, saying: In the name of the Father, the Son and the
Holy Spirit. Amen.
This way of persigning was the general custom of the Church
until the 13th century, according to the testimony of Pope
Innocent III (1216) in his book “De Sacro Altaris Misterio”. Here's what he says: “The sign of the
sign of the cross should be made with the three fingers, since it is made with the
invocation of the SS. Trinity, so that it descends from
from top to bottom and from right to left, because
Christ descended from heaven to earth and passed from the Jews to the Gentiles.
to the Gentiles”. (P. M.P.L. F. 217, col. 825).
5- ANTIMENSIUM The Antimensium corresponds to the stone of

linen or silk body on which the instruments of the

Lord Jesus Christ and his burial. The Antimensium

communion. It is the patriarch who blesses the Antimensias and distributes them
and distributes them to the priests. It is customary to use the
antimensium and the corporal one together

DIVISION OF THE MASS OR LITURGY
The Holy and Divine Liturgy comprises, in addition to the
two main parts: A
Liturgy of the Catechumens and the Liturgy of the Faithful. A
first part, so called because, in the first
centuries of the Church, could be attended by Catechumens
and Penitents, goes up to the oblation, exclusively; the
second part, attended only by the baptized
admitted to communion, goes from the oblation to the end.

St. Lord, friend of men, make the bright light of Your divine knowledge shine in our hearts; open the eyes of our intellect to understand Your evangelical preachings; put in us also the fear of Your holy commandments so that, restraining the desires of the flesh, we may lead a spiritual life, thinking and doing all that pleases You.

Amen. Then He incenses the altar, the icons and the people, and says in a loud voice: St. Wisdom! Let us stand! Let us listen to the Holy Gospel! + Peace to all. C. And to Your spirit. S. Reading of the Holy Gospel according to St. N..., C. Glory to You, Lord, Glory to You. 37 S. Let us be attentive! (and He reads the Gospel. Finishing the reading:) S. Word of Salvation. C. Glory to You, Lord, Glory to You! HOMILY -Seated-
Ecteni (or insistent supplication) -Seated-
S. Let us all say, with all our soul and with all our spirit.
C. Lord, have mercy. (3X).
The choir responds 3 times: "Lord, have mercy" to each of the
requests.
S. Almighty Lord, God of our fathers, we beseech Thee,
hear us and have mercy on us.
S. Have mercy on us, O God, according to Thy great mercy, we beseech Thee, hear us and have mercy on us.
S. We also pray for our Archbishop N..., and for the venerable
order of priests.
38
S. We also pray for our brothers the priests, the deacons, the religious, and for every brother in Christ. St. We also pray, imploring mercy, life, peace, health, salvation, visitation from God, forgiveness and remission of sins for the servants of God who dwell in this city. St. We also pray for the blessed founders of this Holy Church, whose memory is eternal; for all who, faithful to the true faith, rest piously here.

and in every part of the universe.

S. We also pray for those who offer fruits to this holy and venerable temple, for its benefactors, for those who toil and sing in it, and for this people, present here, who await from You great and abundant mercy.

Here the priest prays the secret of the Ecteni:

Lord our God, accept this insistent prayer from Your servants; have mercy on us, according to Your great mercy; pour out Your compassion on us and on all Your people, who await from You great mercy.

Aloud:

39
S. For You are a merciful God and friend of men, and to You we give glory, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages.

C. Amen.

Prayer for the catechumens.
Making a cross with the Gospel on the antimension, the priest invites the faithful to pray for the catechumens, saying: St. Faithful, let us pray for the catechumens. C. Lord, have mercy. (do the same for each of the following petitions). St. That the Lord may have mercy on them. That he may instruct them in the word of truth. That he may reveal to them the Gospel of justice. That he may unite them to his Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.
Liturgy of cathechumeans(part3)
LITURGY OF THE FAITHFUL
St. Let us all, the faithful, once again at peace, pray to the Lord.

C. Lord, have mercy.
St. Help us, O God, have mercy on us, and preserve us, O God, by your grace.
OFFERTORY
Procession of the Gifts and Offertory -Standing-
St. That, protected always by your power, we may give glory to you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages.
C. Amen.
(And immediately he sings the 1st part of the hymn called "Of the Cherubim")
We who mystically represent the Cherubim and sing the thrice-holy hymn to the Life-giving Trinity, let us put aside all temporal concerns so that we may welcome the King of the universe. During the singing of the "Cheruvicon" the priest prays the following secret: None of those who are slaves to the desires and pleasures of the flesh are worthy to appear before You, to approach You and to serve You, O King of glory, because Your service is great and awesome, even to the Heavenly Powers. Nevertheless, in Your ineffable and infinite love for men, You became man, without change or transformation, and You became our high priest; and, as sovereign of all things, You entrusted to us the ministry of this liturgical and bloodless sacrifice. For You alone, Lord our God, rule over heavenly and earthly things, You who sit on the throne of the Cherubim; You who are the Lord of the Seraphim and the King of Israel; You who are the only Holy One and who rest in the Holy Ones. Therefore I beseech Thee, Thou alone good and propitious, look upon me, Thy sinful and worthless servant; purify my soul and heart from an evil conscience, and by the power of Thy Holy Spirit, make me fit, who am clothed with the grace of the priesthood, to appear before Thy Holy Altar and to consecrate Thy Holy and Pure Body and Thy Precious Blood. I come to Thee with bowed head, and I beg Thee: turn not Thy face away from me, do not exclude me from the number of Thy children, but accept that these gifts be offered to Thee by me, Thy sinful and unworthy servant. For it is Thou who offerst and art offered, who receiveth and is distributed, O Christ our God; and we give glory to Thee, as to Thy Eternal Father and to Thy Most Holy, Good and Life-giving Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Bowling three times before the altar, he prays in a low voice the "Hymn of the Cherubim." We who mystically represent the Cherubim and sing the thrice-holy hymn to the Life-giving Trinity, 42 let us put aside all temporal concerns so that we may welcome the King of the universe.
OFFERORY PROCESSION -Standing-
Then he incenses the altar on all four sides, the holy icons, the choir and the people, reciting Psalm 50 and penitential hymns of his choice. Then he goes to the altar of preparation, which he incenses three times, saying each time:
O God, forgive me, a sinner, and have mercy on me.
He lifts the great veil that covers the offerings, saying: "Lift up your hands toward the sanctuary and bless the Lord." He takes the chalice and the paten and leaves the sanctuary, preceded by the ceremonial priests, the crucifer and the thurifer; and passes in procession through the church in the midst of the people, singing as many times as necessary; and for the last time, at the holy doors, facing the people: St. May the Lord God remember us all in his kingdom, at all times, now and always and forever and ever. C. Amen. (And he sings the 2nd part of the hymn of the Cherubim.) 43 May the legions of Angels accompany him invisibly. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. The priest places the chalice and the paten on the altar, removes the smaller veils and covers them with the larger veil, saying: The noble Joseph took down your Immaculate Body from the cross, wrapped it in a pure shroud, covered it with spices and laid it with care in a new tomb. And he incenses the offerings three times, saying each time:
Then they shall offer bulls upon your altars.

C. To You, O Lord. The priest secretly prays the 2nd prayer of the offering: Holy Lord God, Almighty and only Holy, who receives the sacrifice of praise from those who invoke You with all their hearts, receive also our supplication as sinners, and raise it to Your holy altar; make us fit to offer You gifts and spiritual sacrifices for the sins and errors of the people; make us worthy to find grace before You so that our sacrifice may be pleasing to You and that the good Spirit of Your grace may descend upon us, upon these offered gifts and upon Your people. Out loud:
S. By the mercy of your only-begotten Son
With whom you are blessed, just as your most holy, good and Vivifying Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages.

S. + Peace to all!
C. + And to your spirit.
S. Let us love one another, that we may confess in unity of spirit.
C. + The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, consubstantial and indivisible Trinity.

S. Christ among us. (3X).
C. Now and forever.
Liturgy of catechumeans(Part4)
PROFESSION OF FAITH (CREED) -Standing-

St. The doors! The doors! Let us be wisely attentive!

The people pray the symbol of Nicea; the priest lifts the greater veil and waves it over the sacred offerings, until "and he ascended into heaven"...

C. I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages: God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God; begotten, not created, of one substance with the Father.

Through him all things were made. And for us men, and for our salvation, he came down from heaven. And was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. And for us also he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried. He rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, where he sits at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead; and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who spoke through the Prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. And I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. ANAPHORA (PREFACE) Eucharistic Prayer St. Let us stand reverently, let us stand with fear; let us be ready to offer the holy offering in peace. C. The mercy of peace, the sacrifice of praise. S. The grace of + Our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. He turns to the people he blesses. C. And with your spirit! Raise your hands to heaven. S. Let us lift up our hearts on high. 49 C. We have them for the Lord. The priest returning again to the altar, his head bowed and his arms crossed: S. Let us give thanks to the Lord. C. It is worthy and right. SECRET THANKSGIVING The priest waves his hand several times over the sacred offerings and prays the following prayer secretly: It is worthy and right to celebrate You, to bless You, to praise You, to give thanks to You, to adore You in every place of Your dominion. For You are the Ineffable, Inscrutable, Invisible, Incomprehensible God, ever existing and ever the same, Your Only-Begotten Son and Your Holy Spirit. You brought us out of nothingness into existence, and when we fell, You raised us up again; and You have not ceased to do everything until You took us to heaven and gave us Your future Kingdom. We give thanks to You, as well as to Your Only-Begotten Son, and to Your Holy Spirit, for all these things and for all the benefits known and unknown, manifest and hidden. We also thank You for this Liturgy, which You have deigned to accept from our hands, despite having at Your service thousands of Archangels and myriads of Angels, the Cherubim and Seraphim with six wings and many eyes, proud and winged: In You rises: St. Singing the hymn of victory, crying out, shouting and saying: Here the priest takes the asterisk that covers the paten, makes the sign of the cross with it over it, kisses it and puts it aside: SONG OF THE ANGELS -the faithful may kneel- C. Holy (3X), is the Lord of hosts; heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Prayer of Consecration
The priest continues the secret prayer:
St. With these blessed powers, we too,
Lord friend of Men, cry out and say: You are
51
Holy and Most Holy. You, Your Only-Begotten Son and Your
Holy Spirit. You are Holy and Most Holy and magnificent is
Your glory. You who loved Your world so much
that You gave Your Only-Begotten Son, so that whoever
believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. He came and, having fulfilled his entire mission in our regard, on the night in which he was delivered, or rather, in which he gave himself up for the life of the world, taking the bread between his holy, pure and immaculate hands, he gave thanks, blessed it, (the priest raises the paten and blesses the bread that is on it) sanctified it, broke it and gave it to his holy disciples and apostles, saying: Consecration The priest bows his head, raises his right hand showing the paten and says in a loud and serious voice: SAINTS. TAKE, EAT, THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS BROKEN FOR YOU FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS. C. Amen.
52
The priest bows deeply, as do the people,
then holds the chalice in his left hand and blesses it with his right, saying in a low voice:
In the same way, the chalice, after supper, saying:
In a high and grave voice:
S. DRINK ALL OF IT. THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW COVENANT, WHICH IS SHED FOR YOU AND FOR MANY, FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS.
C. Amen.
The priest bows deeply, as do the people, and says in a low voice:

Liturgy of cathecumeans(part5)
Anamnesis
Remembering this commandment of the Savior and all that was accomplished for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection on the third day, the ascension into heaven, the enthronement at the right hand of the Father, the second and glorious coming. Here the priest holds the paten in his right hand and the chalice in his left hand; he crosses his hands in the form of a cross, placing the right hand on top of the left; and thus makes the sign of the cross over the antimension, saying aloud: S. What is yours of what is yours we offer in everything and for everything. C. We praise you, we bless you, we give you thanks, O Lord, and we beseech you, O God. Epiclesis (invocation of the Holy Spirit)
The priest prays:
St. We also offer You this spiritual and unbloody adoration and we implore, pray, and beseech You: send Your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts present here.
Then he makes three deep bows, each time praying the following prayer of invocation to the Holy Spirit:
Lord, who at the third hour sent Your Most Holy Spirit upon Your apostles, do not take it away from us, You who are good, but renew it in us who implore You. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew within me the spirit of righteousness. Lord, at the third hour..... Do not cast me away from your presence and
54
do not take your Holy Spirit from me.... Lord, at the third hour.....
Then bless the consecrated bread with the sign of the cross, saying:
S. And make of this bread + the precious Body of Your Christ.
C. Amen.
And bless the chalice, saying:
S. And of what is in this chalice, + the precious Blood of
Your Christ.
C. Amen.
And blessing the chalice and the paten, say
S. Transforming them by + Your Spirit.
C. Amen. (3X).
Then the priest, waving the veil over the offerings, continues in a low voice: St. So that they may be for those who receive the Holy Spirit, purification of souls, forgiveness of sins, the communion of Your Holy Spirit, the fullness of the Kingdom of Heaven, a title of trust before You and not of judgment or condemnation. COMMEMORATIONS St. We also offer You this spiritual adoration for those who have died in the faith: ancestors, fathers, patriarchs, prophets, apostles, preachers, evangelists, martyrs, confessors, ascetics, and all the righteous who have died in the faith. Special Commemoration of the Blessed Virgin The priest incenses the sacred offerings and the altar, saying in a loud voice: St. Especially our Most Holy, Most Pure, Most Blessed and Most Glorious Lady, Mother of God and Ever Virgin Mary. C. It is truly right to glorify you, O Mother of God, who are blessed forever, free from all sin, and Mother of our God. You are more venerable than the Cherubim, incomparably more glorious than the Seraphim. You who gave birth to the Word of God, without ceasing to be a Virgin. We exalt you who are truly the Mother of God. This hymn to the Mother of God varies with the great feasts. In the Masses of Saint Basil the choir sings the following hymn: C. O full of grace, all creation rejoices in you. The assembly of the Angels and the human race glorify you, O sanctified temple, spiritual paradise and glory of virgins, in whom God became incarnate and of whom He who is our God before the ages became Son. For He has made Your bosom a throne, and Your womb is wider than the heavens. O full of grace, all creation rejoices in You and glorifies You. During the singing of this hymn, the priest continues in secret: Commemoration of the Saints St. We also offer You this spiritual adoration for the holy prophet and precursor John the Baptist, for the holy and glorious Apostles worthy of all praise, for the holy N..., whose memory we celebrate today, and for all Your Saints. C. For their prayers, O Lord, look down upon us. 57 Commemoration of the Dead St. Remember also those who have fallen asleep with the hope of the resurrection to eternal life. C. Grant them rest where the light of Your countenance shines. Commemoration of the Living
St. We also beseech Thee: Remember, O Lord, the entire Catholic episcopate who faithfully spread the word of Thy truth, the entire order of priests, the deacons who serve in the Lord, and all the clergy. We also offer Thee this spiritual adoration for the universe, for the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, for those who lead a pure and holy life, for our faithful rulers and friends of Christ, for all their auxiliaries and armies. Grant them, O Lord, a peaceful government so that we too, enjoying their peace, may lead in all piety and honesty a quiet and peaceful life. Commemoration of the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy
Out loud:
58
St. Remember, O Lord, first of all the blessed Supreme Pontiff, Pope N..., our
Patriarch N..., our Archbishop N..., grant to
Your Holy Church that they may live long days, in peace, health and honor, faithfully distributing the word of
Your truth.
C. And of all men and women.
The priest continues secretly the commemoration
of the living:
St. Remember, O Lord, the city in which we dwell,
and every city and village and the faithful who
and dwell therein.
Remember, O Lord, those who travel by sea, land, and air, the sick, the afflicted, and the imprisoned.
C. Grant them salvation.
Commemoration of Benefactors
St. Remember, O Lord, those who offer fruits and the benefactors of Your Holy Churches; those who remember the poor.
C. Send Your mercy upon all.
Liturgy of catechumeans (part6)
59
The priest concluding aloud:

S. And grant that with one voice and one heart we may glorify and celebrate Your venerable and magnificent Name, + Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages.

C. Amen.

The priest gives the blessing to the people saying:

S. + And may the mercy of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, be with you all.

C. + And with your spirit.

62
S. And grant us, O Lord, to be bold, with confidence
and without condemnation, to call You Father, the
Heavenly God, and to say:
C. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.

C. Before You, O Lord.
63
All, choir, people, and priest bow their heads in adoration, while the priest recites the following prayer:
S. We thank You, O Invisible King, who by Your Infinite Power created all things and by Your immense mercy brought them out of nothingness into existence. You, O Lord, look down from heaven upon those who have bowed their heads before You, because they have not bowed them before flesh and blood, but before You, O awesome God. You, then, O Lord, have distributed these gifts among us all for the good of each one, according to his or her particular needs: accompany those who travel by sea, land, and air, heal the sick, You who are the physician of our souls and bodies. Out loud:

St. By the grace, mercy and love of your only-begotten Son, with whom you are blessed, as well as your most holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and unto the ages of ages.

C. Amen.

In a low voice:

64
St. Lord Jesus Christ, our God, look down from your holy dwelling place and from the throne of glory of your kingdom. Come and sanctify us, you who sit on high with the Father and who are present here with us invisibly.

Make us worthy by your mighty hand to partake of your pure body and your precious blood, and through us distribute them to all the people.

The priest makes three profound bows, saying each time:

St. O God, forgive me a sinner and have mercy on me. (3X).
Liturgy of cathechumeans(part7)
HOLY COMMUNION
Elevation of the Host
The priest, bending over the altar, raises the host, saying
loudly:
S. Let us be attentive! He who is Holy, to the Saints.
C. One is Holy, one is Lord, Jesus Christ, to the
glory of God the Father. Amen.

65
Fraction of the Host
The priest divides the host into as many parts as he can, saying in a low voice:
S. The Lamb of God is broken and divided, which is broken without being divided, which is always eaten and never consumed, but sanctifies those who receive it.
Of these four parts placed on the paten in the form of a cross, he takes
the upper part on which the name "Jesus" is marked, makes a cross with it on top of the chalice and drops it into it, saying
secretly:
S. The fullness of the faith of the Holy Spirit.
The hot water (the Zeon)
The priest takes a small spoon, into which one of the acolytes
pours a drop of boiling water, blesses it saying:
Blessed be the fervor of your saints, at all times now and
always and for ever and ever. Amen.
Pouring it into the chalice, in the form of a cross, saying:
The fervor of faith, full of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The "Quinonicon" or Communion Song
66
During these ceremonies, the choir sings the Quinonicon or Communion Song, which varies according to the day of the week or the feast being celebrated:
Sunday: Praise the Lord from the heights of heaven. Alleluia.
Monday: The Lord has made his angels spirits and his ministers tongues of fire. Alleluia.
Tuesday: The memory of the righteous will be forever. Alleluia.
Wednesday: I will take the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord. Alleluia.
Thursday: Their voice has gone out into all the earth, and their words have formed to the ends of the world.
Alleluia.
Friday: It is written, O Lord, upon the light of your face. Alleluia.
Or: You have wrought salvation in the midst of the earth, O Christ God. Alleluia.
Saturday: Blessed are those whom You have chosen and called, to dwell in Your courts, O Lord. Alleluia. 67 Or: Rejoice in the Lord, O righteous, for praise is fitting for the upright. Alleluia. Prayers in Preparation for Communion 1. I believe and confess, O Lord, that You are truly the Christ, the Son of the living God, who came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the first. I believe also that this bread is Your Pure Body, this wine, Your precious Blood. I beg You, therefore, to have mercy on me and forgive me the faults I have committed, willingly or unwillingly, in word or in deed, knowingly or through ignorance. Make me worthy to receive Your Pure Mysteries without condemnation, for the forgiveness of sins and for eternal life. Amen.
2- Receive me today, a participant in your mystical supper, O Son of God. For I will not reveal your mystery to your enemies, nor will I kiss you like Judas; but like the thief I say to you: remember me, Lord, in your kingdom.
3- Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under the sordid roof of my soul, but just as you deigned to recline in the cave and in the manger of the animals, and to receive, in the house of Simon the leper, the sinner, guilty as I am, who approached you, so deign to enter the manger of my brutalized soul and my stained body, the body of a dead man and a leper. And just as You were not disgusted by the stained mouth of the sinner who kissed Your immaculate feet, so also, my Lord God, do not be disgusted by me, a sinner; but since You are good and a friend of men, make me worthy to receive Your Body and Your Most Holy Blood. 4. O our God, blot out, absolve, and forgive my sins that I have committed against You, consciously or unconsciously, in word or deed; forgive them all, because You are good and a friend of men. And through the prayers of Your Most Pure and Ever-Virgin Mother, make me worthy to receive without condemnation Your Holy and Immaculate Body, for the healing of soul and body. For to You belong royalty, power, and glory forever and ever. Amen.
69
5- May the reception of Your Holy Mysteries, O Lord, not be for my judgment or condemnation, but for the healing of my soul and body.
Communion of the Priest
The priest takes in his hand the part of the Host marked with the
abbreviation of the word "Christ" and receives Communion, saying:
S. The Precious and Holy Body of our Lord, God and Savior
Jesus Christ, is given to me, N..., priest, for the remission of
my sins and for eternal life.
Then he holds in his hand the chalice and the little blood, saying:
S. The Precious and Holy Blood of our Lord, God and Savior
Jesus Christ, is given to me, N..., priest, for the remission of
my sins and for eternal life.
And he receives three sips from the chalice, and wipes the chalice and his lips,
saying:
S. This has touched my lips, blot out my faults and purify me from my sins.
Communion of the Faithful
The priest holds the chalice and paten, which he raises before the faithful, saying:
70
S. With fear of God, faith and love, approach Holy Communion.
C. Amen. Amen. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. The Lord is God and has appeared to us.
The faithful who wish to receive Communion approach, standing. The priest gives them Holy Communion under both kinds, saying:
S. The servant of God N..., receives the Holy and Precious Body and Blood of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of sins and for eternal life. Amen.
C. Receive me today as a participant in your supper mystical
O Son of God. For I will not reveal Your Mystery
to Your enemies, nor will I kiss You like Judas; but
like the thief I say to You: remember me,
Lord, in Your Kingdom
Liturgy of catechumeans(part8)
After Communion
After distributing Communion to the faithful, the priest
blesses the people, saying:
71
St. O God, save your people and bless your inheritance.
C. We have seen the true light, we have received the heavenly Spirit, we have found the true faith, we adore the Indivisible Trinity, because He has saved us.
On major feasts this hymn is replaced by the apolitiquion of the feast. Meanwhile, the priest incenses three times the chalice and the paten that he has placed back on the altar, saying each time in a low voice:
St. O God, be exalted above the heavens and may your glory extend over all the earth.
Then he takes them to the small altar of preparation, raising them before the people and saying in a loud voice:
St. Blessed be our God at all times, now and always, and unto the ages of ages.
C. Amen.
C. May our mouths, O Lord, be filled with Your praises, for You have made us worthy to share in Your Holy, Immortal, and Pure Mysteries. Keep us in holiness, that we may sing Your glory and proclaim Your justice all day long. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Thanksgiving
St. Stand up, you who have received the Mysteries of Christ, Divine, Holy, Immortal, Pure, Heavenly, Life-giving, and Fearful, that we may give to the Lord worthy thanksgivings.
C. Lord, have mercy.
S. Help us, save us, have mercy on us, and preserve us, O God, by Your grace.
C. Lord, have mercy. S. Asking that this whole day may be perfect, holy, peaceful and sinless, let us commend ourselves, one to another and our whole life to Christ, our God. C. To You, Lord. C. Prayers of Thanksgiving after Holy Communion.

Having received the sacredunion, the faithful will say with fervor and from the depths of their hearts the following prayers of thanksgiving: 79 Glory to You, O God (3X). 1- I give You thanks, Lord, my God, for not having rejected me, a sinner, but for having admitted me to Your Holy Mysteries. I give You thanks because You have made me a partaker of Your Most Pure and Heavenly Gifts, despite my unworthiness. O Lord, friend of men, who died and rose again for our salvation, and gave us these fearful and life-giving Mysteries of Yours, for the good and sanctification of our souls and bodies; grant that these may work the healing of my soul and body, repelling every enemy, illuminating the eyes of my heart, giving peace to my spiritual forces, inspiring in me an unshakable faith, an unhypocritical love, profound wisdom, the fulfillment of Your commandments; increasing Your Divine Grace in me and helping me to attain Your Kingdom. So that, preserved by them in Your Holiness, I may always remember Your Graces and live no longer for myself, but for You, my God and Benefactor. And so, when I leave this world, in the hope of eternal life, I will enter into eternal rest, where the songs are uninterrupted and the happiness of those who contemplate the ineffable beauty of Your Face never ends. For, O Christ our God, You are truly the hope of those who love You and their inexpressible beatitude, and to You the praise of all creation, for ever and ever. Amen.
LITURGY FOR CATECHUMENS(Part 10 and Final)
Prayer of Saint Basil the Great
80
2- Lord Jesus Christ our God, King of the ages and Creator of all things, I give You thanks for all the blessings with which You have bestowed upon me and for the reception of Your pure and life-giving Mysteries. I beg You, O Good and Friend of men: keep me under Your protection and under the shadow of Your wings; grant me, until my last breath, to receive worthily and with a pure conscience Your Holy Mysteries, for the forgiveness of my sins and eternal life; for You are the bread of life, the source of holiness and the dispenser of blessings; and we give glory to You, as well as to the Father and to the Holy Spirit, now and always, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Prayer of Simon Metaphrastes
3- Lord, who gave me Your Body as food, who are
a fire that devours the unworthy, do not consume me, O my Creator,
but penetrate to the ligaments of my members, to all my joints, to my kidneys and to my heart. Burn away the
thorns of my sins, purify my soul, sanctify my intelligence, strengthen my nerves and my bones, enlighten
my five senses and nail me entirely to Your fear.
Protect me, guard me always against every action or word
that could pervert my soul. Cleanse me, purify me, correct me, adorn me, instruct me and enlighten me, make me the exclusive dwelling place of Your Spirit, and do not allow me to harbor sin in the future, so that, becoming Your own home through communion, every evil creature and every perverse passion may depart from me, as from fire. I present to You as intercessors all the Saints: the leaders of the angelic armies, Your precursor, the apostolic sages, and, in particular, Your Pure and Immaculate Mother. Hear favorably their supplications, O compassionate Christ, and make me, Your servant, a child of light. For You alone are the Sanctifier and Illuminator of our souls, O Good God; and we all give You glory every day, as is fitting, because You are Lord and God. Another prayer 4- Lord Jesus Christ, our God, may Your Holy Body be for me the pledge of eternal life, and may Your Precious Blood cleanse me from my sins; and may these gifts be for me joy, health and gladness; and at Your fearful second coming, make me worthy, a sinner, to stand at the right hand of Your glory, through the intercession of Your Most Pure Mother and of all Your Saints. Amen. Prayer to the Most Holy Mother of God 5- Most Holy Lady Mother of God, light of my soul enveloped in darkness, my hope, my support, my refuge, my consolation and joy, I give You thanks for having judged me worthy to partake of the Pure Body and Precious Blood of Your Son. You who gave birth to the true Light, enlighten the spiritual eyes of my soul. You who conceived the source of immortality, restore to me the life that sin took from me. Compassionate Mother of the God of Mercy, have mercy on me, give recollection and repentance to my heart and humility to my imagination, and banish dissipation from my thoughts. Make me worthy, until my last breath, to receive, without condemnation, the sanctity of the Pure Mysteries, for the healing of my soul and body. Grant me tears of confession and contrition, that I may praise and glorify You all the days of my life, for You are Blessed and Glorious forever. Amen.
