Rise of the Doom Slayer

Doom is a high-octane, brutal shooter that requires precision, speed, and tactical combat. Whether you're a newcomer or a seasoned veteran, understanding the ins and outs of combat mechanics, weapon usage, and advanced strategies will give you the edge in your battle against the demon horde. This guide dives deep into the game's core mechanics, giving you tips, tricks, and strategies for mastering combat, movement, weapons, and upgrades.
General Combat Tips: Becoming a Demon Slayer
Never Stop Moving
Doom’s combat system is built around the concept of constant motion. You’re always moving, always dodging, and always attacking. Standing still or trying to take cover will get you killed quickly. Here's how to use movement to your advantage:

  • Use Double Jump and Dash: The Double Jump and Dash (available later in the game) give you unparalleled mobility. These abilities allow you to reach hard-to-get places, avoid enemy fire, and stay one step ahead of your foes. Mastering them is key to surviving tougher encounters.

  • Verticality in Combat: Doom is designed with multiple levels of terrain. Get familiar with jumping up ledges, using elevated platforms for better positioning, and dodging from high ground to avoid ground-based enemies. By using the map's verticality, you can outmaneuver enemies and stay on the offensive.

Glory Kills: Essential for Survival
When enemies’ health drops to a certain point, you’ll see a Glory Kill prompt. These are brutal, cinematic takedowns that restore your health. They are vital to staying alive, especially in longer fights.

  • Tip: Glory Kills work best when performed on weakened enemies, such as Imps and Zombie Soldiers, but don’t hesitate to execute them on bigger enemies when possible. These takedowns ensure you won’t run out of health in the heat of battle.

  • Advanced Trick: Chainsaw and Glory Kills go hand-in-hand. If you're low on ammo, use the Chainsaw on weaker enemies to replenish your ammo, then perform Glory Kills for health.

Ammo Management: Precision is Key
Doom is designed for players who enjoy efficient combat. While weapons are plentiful, ammo is limited. The game emphasizes strategic use of weapons to avoid running dry.

  • Tip: Use close-range weapons like the Shotgun or Super Shotgun when fighting smaller enemies. The Assault Rifle should be used for medium-range combat, and only save your heavy-hitters (Rocket Launcher, Plasma Rifle) for large enemies or groups.

  • Advanced Trick: Use the Chainsaw for ammo farming. When you see a weakened enemy, use the Chainsaw to restore ammo. You’ll get a hefty supply of ammo without wasting precious resources.

Managing Health and Armor
Staying alive in Doom requires constantly managing your health and armor. The key is to stay on the move, find pickups, and use Glory Kills for health regeneration.

  • Tip: Health packs are often hidden in secret areas, while armor is frequently dropped by enemies. Always keep an eye on your health, especially before major fights.

  • Advanced Trick: The Praetor Suit upgrades allow you to carry more armor. Use Armor to absorb incoming damage while relying on health drops and Glory Kills for survival.
Weapon Tips & Tricks: Mastering Your Arsenal
Doom offers a variety of weapons, each suited for different combat scenarios. Understanding how to use each weapon effectively is essential for progression. Here’s a breakdown of each weapon’s strengths, weaknesses, and advanced tips for maximizing their effectiveness.

Shotgun: The Workhorse
The Shotgun is one of the most reliable and effective weapons in Doom. It’s great for close-range combat, clearing out small enemies, and doing major damage to mid-level threats.

  • When to Use: Always have the Shotgun equipped when dealing with close-range enemies like Imps, Soldiers, and Pinky Demons. It’s also a great weapon for clearing rooms of lower-level demons.

  • Tip: Aim for the head to deal more damage. The Shotgun is particularly effective against weaker enemies when you’re in close quarters.

  • Advanced Trick: The Explosive Shot mod turns the Shotgun into a mini grenade launcher. It’s excellent for clearing out groups of enemies or dealing with heavily armored foes like Revenants.

Super Shotgun: The Close-Range Devastator
The Super Shotgun is a two-barrel powerhouse that excels in close-range combat. It can wipe out multiple enemies in one shot and is devastating against bosses.

  • When to Use: Use the Super Shotgun when you need to obliterate bosses or larger groups of smaller enemies. It’s also excellent for when you're swarmed by demons.

  • Tip: Get close to enemies to maximize the damage output. The Super Shotgun is most effective when you’re in close-quarters.

  • Advanced Trick: Use the melee boost mod for added mobility. By pressing melee (F) after a shot, you’ll launch yourself backwards, creating space between you and enemies for quick reloads.

Rocket Launcher: The Area Denial King
The Rocket Launcher is perfect for handling large groups of enemies and heavily armored demons. Its splash damage can clear entire rooms.

  • When to Use: Use the Rocket Launcher when dealing with high health enemies, such as Mancubus and Baron of Hell, or when you’re facing large groups of enemies.

  • Tip: Avoid shooting too close, as splash damage can hurt you. Instead, aim for environmental hazards or far-off enemies to deal maximum damage.

  • Advanced Trick: The Lock-on Burst mod is great for large enemies. When using the Lock-on Burst, you can fire multiple homing rockets in quick succession, ensuring you hit your target even if they’re moving fast.

Plasma Rifle: The Crowd Control Master
The Plasma Rifle excels at dealing with groups of enemies and can burst down shields with ease. Its Heat Blast mod can push back enemies and deal devastating damage in close quarters.

  • When to Use: Use the Plasma Rifle for crowd control and against shielded enemies like Barons of Hell and Cacodemons.

  • Tip: The Heat Blast mod is a lifesaver when you're surrounded. It fires a charged burst that clears enemies in close quarters.

  • Advanced Trick: Use the Plasma Rifle’s automatic fire against weaker enemies, while saving the Heat Blast for when larger demons try to close in.

Chainsaw: The Ammo Resupply
The Chainsaw is more than just a melee weapon—it’s also a tool for ammo replenishment.

  • When to Use: The Chainsaw is vital when you’re low on ammo. It instantly refills your inventory by cutting down weaker enemies.

  • Tip: Use the Chainsaw against small enemies like Imps or Soldiers, as they provide a ton of ammo when killed.

  • Advanced Trick: After using the Chainsaw, immediately go into a Glory Kill to regenerate health. This combo will keep you topped off on both ammo and health.

BFG 9000: The Ultimate Weapon
The BFG 9000 is the most powerful weapon in Doom 2016. It fires a massive energy blast that can wipe out entire groups of enemies in one shot.

  • When to Use: Save the BFG for bosses, elite demons, or swarming mobs. It’s a one-hit kill for nearly any enemy in its path.

  • Tip: Don’t waste the BFG on smaller enemies. Save it for moments when you’re completely overwhelmed, or when you face a demon boss.

  • Advanced Trick: The BFG's blast can pass through walls. If you’re facing enemies behind cover, fire through the walls to hit them.
Advanced Combat Strategies: Dominate the Battlefield
Understanding Enemy Weaknesses
Each enemy in Doom has its own weaknesses. Learning these can make a huge difference in your efficiency and survival.

  • Imps: Weak to Shotgun and Plasma Rifle.
  • Pinky Demons: Use the Rocket Launcher to deal with their high health.
  • Cacodemons: Aim for their eyes with Precision Shot (Assault Rifle) or Plasma Rifle.
  • Barons of Hell: Use Explosive Shot (Shotgun) or Rocket Launcher for massive damage.

Positioning and Tactical Awareness
Positioning is key. Always try to get the high ground and control choke points. Use your mobility to stay ahead of enemies and manipulate the battlefield to your advantage.

  • Tip: Use doorways and open areas as choke points to trap enemies and keep them from swarming you.

  • Advanced Trick: Stagger enemy spawns by using the environment to keep enemies in a specific area, allowing you to isolate and eliminate them one at a time.
Perfecting Your Doom Skills
Doom is about mastering movement, combat timing, and weapon management. By mastering Glory Kills, managing your ammo, and using each weapon to its fullest potential, you’ll be able to face the demon horde with confidence. Always keep your momentum going, find secrets, and don’t hesitate to engage in quick, brutal combat. With practice, you’ll become the ultimate demon slayer!

Good luck, and enjoy the fast-paced, brutal combat that Doom has to offer!

this is good stuff. for beginners I also offer a bit of personal expertise: shoot that demon, then shoot that next demon. shoot demon behind that next demon, then shoot fourth demon. shoot, then shoot; shoot next demon, rip second demon's head in half like it were rotted wood. then proceed down the hallway while shooting more demons.

this should get you pretty far but if you forget, do be sure to come back to the guide above. by the time you've shot 1,000,001 demons, you should be good to proceed to the last half of the game. hope this helps.
