Direhowl (Level 9)

"Long ago Direhowl would hunt alongside humans but over the years this bond faded."

Direhowl inhabit most of the islands surrounding the "Windswept Hills". You can find packs of Direhowl roaming west of the "Desolate Church" and the "Abandoned Mineshaft". Be ready for a hostile encounter when approaching packs of Direhowl, they often attack anything on sight.

As a "Neutral" type, Direhowl is well rounded in terms of defense but has no strengths against another element. Neutral pals have no subspecies of the same type, but many have variants in the form of other elements. Direhowl can utilize a variety of movement and combat skills, the standard being Direhowl's unique special skill "Fierce Fang", an offensive dash towards enemies. This can be used outside of combat as an ability to travel much faster when exploring.

Direhowl are the strongest early game pals for exploration and combat. You can tame one by capturing it with a "Palsphere" at very low levels. However, to actually ride one you will need to build a "Pal Gear Workbench" unlocked at level 6, then craft the "Direhowl's Saddled Harness" technology unlocked at level 9.

The earliest obtainable mount technology is actually the "Rushoar Saddle" unlocked at level 6, followed by the "Melpaca Saddle" at level 7. That makes Direhowl the 3rd pal capable of being used as a mount.

What makes Direhowl a better mount than Rushoar or Melpaca if they can be used much earlier?
That's because Direhowl has faster movement speed and lower ability cooldowns than Rushoar and Melpaca. You will be dealing higher damage and travelling much more efficiently with your Direhowl.
Also come on, riding a giant wolf is just badass.
Alpha Direhowl
Speaking of badass giant wolves, powerful boss variants of Direhowl that are much larger and faster than the standard can also be tamed. Look at how big that boy is!

Pals located within the boss room inside dungeons and designated world bosses appear as giant sized pals known as an "Alpha Pal"
Outside of dungeons and world boss locations, pals can also randomly spawn as a rare variant of "Lucky Pal" given away by its sound cue, sparkling appearance, and increased size similar to alpha pals.

The dungeon variants of alpha pals can be found within the "Level 13 Hillside Cavern" dungeon located on the beach shoreline behind the "Plateau of Beginnings" just down the road from spawn. You can acquire an alpha Direhowl by exiting and re-entering the boss room inside the dungeon as many times as you like until the boss respawns as a Direhowl.

Alphas travel faster and more efficiently at the cost of having slightly larger hitboxes. You'll want to have the alpha variant Direhowl for the higher damage and mobility advantages.
The larger Direhowl is great for exploring and getting around since it runs faster and jumps higher than the standard variant.

Dragon Cannon | Ignis Blast
If you're lucky while looting chests found in dungeons or by discovering the locations of "Skill Fruit" trees, you can find highly valuable consumables to teach your pals new tricks.

There are two "Epic" rarity skill fruits that can be given to your Direhowl that will instantly upgrade this pal from being a useful mount, to a useful mounted turret.

Obtain both "Ignis Blast" and "Dragon Cannon" skill fruits then teach these skills to your Direhowl through the palbox interface.

Ignis Blast is a short range "Fire" type projectile fireball with a low cooldown of 2 seconds. Alternatively, Ignis Blast can be automatically unlocked by Direhowl once reaching level 30.

Dragon Cannon is a "Dragon" type purple fireball projectile with the same length cooldown of 2 seconds. Direhowl will not unlock this skill through leveling. You will be required to get your hands on a matching skill fruit.

Utilize the low cooldowns of both skills to maximize the damage output of Direhowl by rapidly casting and alternating between them, chaining fire and dragon damage types and applying fire damage over time to enemies.
Eikthyrdeer (Level 12)

"The one who possesses the most impressive antlers becomes the leader of the herd. If their antlers are broken, they become depressed and leave the herd never to be seen again."

Eikthyrdeer can be found grazing around most of the southern islands. They are especially abundant throughout the "Windswept Hills". Eikthyrdeer are shy pals that will typically flee when approached. However when fighting, their antlers make them a force to be reckoned with.

Eikthyrdeer is another neutral type with high defense, but very little skills to utilize as counters to other elements. Eikthyrdeer are great to bring with you when gathering wood, they make useful lumberjacks by bashing it's antlers against trees.

Eikthyrdeer is one of the most unique mounts and is capable of moving in ways no other mount can. If you are familiar with Elden Ring's Torrent, you'll quickly recognize the utility of Eikthyrdeer being able to double jump. Eikthyrdeer also has an exclusive skill called "Antler Uppercut" that allows it to charge forward faster than it's sprint speed and finish with a toss of it's antlers.

If riding a giant majestic stag is your preference, Eikthyrdeer will be reliable even when tackling end game content and exploring higher difficulty regions.
Eikthyrdeer Terra (Level 25)

"The individual with the hardest horns becomes the leader. Once the horns are lost, so too is the leadership status. It leaves the herd amidst farewell glances and quietly returns to the earth."

Eikthyrdeer Terra are an incredibly rare variant of Eikthyrdeer that only appear on the "No. 1 Wildlife Sanctuary" island and are considered a protected species. The act of travelling to the island alone is considered criminal activity so approach undetected and take precautions not to be caught trespassing there. The "Palpagos Island Defense Force" or "PIDF" guard each of the wildlife sanctuary islands and will shoot to kill on sight if they detect intruders.

Geting past the guards is one thing, but actually getting to the island itself will prove difficult. There are no "Great Eagle Statues" on the wildlife sanctuaries and no method of fast travelling to one unless you establish a base there, which is ill advised. The journey can only be made on foot which in this case means water!

Thankfully swimming across the ocean to the island from the "Castaway Beach" statue located East on the "Sea Breeze Archipelago" is possible with Direhowl and Eikthyrdeer! To make the journey without drowning, aim for the metallic relic structures of the "Ancient Civilization" monuments jutting off of the island. Make use of Direhowl's fierce fang ability, or Eikthyrdeer's antler charge ability to rapidly dash through the water until they are depleted of stamina. Once your pals are exhausted about halfway to the island, dismount and cover the rest of the distance by swimming.

Much like the standard variant, Eikthyrdeer Terra proves to be one of the most useful mounts, and versatile in combat. Eikthyrdeer Terra can make use of the same double jump and antler charge abilities, along with having access to a selection of it's own unique skills.

As a "Ground" type, Eikthyrdeer Terra are resistant to electricity and "Electric" type pals, but are weakened by "Grass" types. Eikthyrdeer Terra can channel the powers of earth through its antlers, and have access to a variety of stone and energy based powers. For example at level 22, the "Stone Cannon" skill is a large boulder projectile Eikthyrdeer Terra can toss at enemies. By using it's antlers to summon an orb of energy, "Power Bomb" is a skill Eikthyrdeer Terra learns at level 30.
Alpha Eikthyrdeer | Eikthyrdeer Terra
It wouldn't quite be the same if you didn't also have a noble steed with a towering set of horns or a majestic golden giant to ride into battle, both in the form of an alpha pal now would it? You definitely want an alpha Eikthyrdeer or Eikthyrdeer Terra to match your alpha Direhowl and be best friends together right?

Finding an alpha Eikthyrdeer to tame shouldn't prove too challenging. Much like alpha Direhowl, you will be able to find the larger variants within dungeons or uncommonly in the world.
Finding an alpha Eikthyrdeer Terra however, is unfortunately not as easy. For starters, alpha variants of Eikthyrdeer Terra do not exist. No Eikthyrdeer Terra will spawn as bosses in dungeons. Instead, the only obtainable large variant of Eikthyrdeer Terra comes in the form of a lucky pal. You could even say it glows!

Feeling Lucky?

Lucky Eikthyrdeer Terra are incredibly rare and made even harder to acquire from the fact they can only be found on the "No. 1 Wildlife Sanctuary" island, protected by PIDF guards.
If spending hours running in circles, sneaking past guards, and climbing over rocks in search of a fabled creature sounds exhausting just know that it definitely is! There is however one strategy you can use to artificially boost the chances of finding them.

You can toggle the spawn rates of pals from 1-3 in the "World Settings" at the starting menu before you load into a world. This often can be responsible for poor performance and drops in frame rate and can only be done by the host or admin of a world. In any case, it effectively triples the rate at which Eikthyrdeer Terra spawn and by extension increases the chances of them spawning as lucky pals.

Good hunting!

Unless an update changed this, flying mounts can move just above the surface of the water without using stamina whatsoever

you know you have a random chance to get alpha pals from breeding right? just breed eikthyrdeer terra

the larger hitbox from alpha pals make moving around in dungeons unpleasant, i would never recommend using an alpha pal ever because it makes movement in restricted spaces just worse
