Browser Skins to Remove the Clutter/Blue from Steam
By Raydell
This guide shows you how to change the appearance of the Steam pages by applying custom styles (skins) through a browser addon called Stylish. If you dislike Steam's default look, this is one thing you can do to change it.

The advantages of custom styles:
  • They can remove parts of the pages (e.g. Curators, Queue, Recommendations, etc.)
  • They can repaint the pages to different colors (e.g. to get rid of the blue)

(For Steam client skins, check out my other guide.)

Introduction
Dear fellow Steam users!

If you're one of those unfortunate people (like me) who find the current Steam color scheme and/or layout less appealing than the old one, you might be happy to hear that it's possible to change these things through a nifty browser addon called "Stylish".

This addon allows browsers such as Chrome or Firefox to apply different styles (skins) to webpages that can completely change the way they look. The best thing is that you don't even have to create these skins yourself - you can simply download skins (completely free) made by others and be on your way browsing familiar pages with all-new looks in just 2-3 clicks!

(For Steam client skins, check out my other guide.)
1 Minute Quickstart Guide
Here's how to set yourself up with a new Steam look in less than a minute:

Step 1 -- (2-3 clicks): Get the free browser addon called "Stylish"

Step 2 -- (3-4 clicks): Grab a custom style for Steam

  • Go to http://userstyles.org/styles/browse/steampowered , pick a skin from the list and click "Install with Stylish".

  • I also created some myself, the list of which you can find below (for screenshots see the second half of the guide):

    • Compact Steam UI[userstyles.org] - Removes curators, recommendations, the queue, etc, no changes in color theme
    • Dark Steam UI - Theme-only[userstyles.org] - Dark color theme applied to all Steam pages, no layout changes
    • Dark Steam UI - Compact[userstyles.org] - Dark color theme applied to all Steam pages, removes curators, recommendations, the queue, etc
    • Curatorless Steam[userstyles.org] - Prevents curators from showing up on Steam (store and game pages)

Uninstallation (3-4 clicks):
If you don't like a custom style, you can uninstall it anytime by pressing the Stylish button in your browser's toolbar and clicking Delete under the style's name (in Chrome) or right-clicking it and selecting Remove (in Firefox).

Removing Stylish itself can be done just as easily through the browser's addon management. Just click the Menu button (icon with 3 horizontal lines), select Addons or Extensions, find Stylish in the list and click Remove.
Skins and Screenshots
You can find many useful and interesting Steam skins for browsers on userstyles.org, so I encourage everyone to check them out.

Below is a list of those created by me, with some screenshots and short descriptions:

Compact Steam UI (CSUI):

This skin removes the clutter from the storefront by blocking the curators, the new on Steam, the recommendations, the queue, the recently updated and the endlessly scrolling bottom.

Dark Steam UI (DSUI) - Theme-only:

The Dark Steam UI skins repaint the whole of Steam into a dark grey theme very similar to its pre-2014 look. This is the Theme-only version, which:
  • Changes Steam's color theme to dark grey,
  • Doesn't change anything else.

Dark Steam UI (DSUI) - Compact:

The Dark Steam UI skins repaint the whole of Steam into a dark grey theme very similar to its pre-2014 look. This is the Compact version, which:
  • Changes Steam's color theme to dark grey,
  • Removes all new storefront elements (curators, recommendations, etc).

Hey, it's nice to see you again! And thank you, I'm up a little late (2 am) due to a Steam update hitting just before I went to sleep and giving me some work with updating my client skins.

Thought I'd drop a line here too while I'm at it. Hope you're having a great evening too and enjoying whichever skin/browser style you're using if any! :)

Hope you're having a good day Raydell :)

So I finally got around to updating this guide thanks to the latest Steam beta scare that threatened to disable my client skins. :steamfacepalm:

Although it turned out to be just a scare in the end, at least it pushed me to update both the guide and the associated browser skins, so anyone finding their way here won't be looking at outdated content anymore.

Also added one more skin from my client selection called "Curatorless Steam". It's a minuscule skin that simply prevents curators from showing up anywhere on Steam.

And once again a belated thank you to Lulu for bringing back some life to this guide when I've all but forgotten about it. Cheers! :steamhappy:

Wow, I didn't think anybody still cared about this guide. I wonder how you found it!

I really should get around to updating it sometime (last update: 2015, ouch!). Hope the links still work.

In any case though, thank you for your kind words and you're welcome! Glad you found it helpful. :)

Is there any way to make this work on the version of the store that appears in Steam itself?

Alright, I'll respect your preference but do say so if you change your mind. :)
