Building Overview ~ Please read

Showroom Catalogue
As an option to creating a house from scratch there's a selection of pre-made templates to choose from. These were created by the community and selected by the devs during EA.

Go to Heidi's Construction Junction to view and use the Showroom Catalogue.

.

Optionally, a Home Editing Toolkit can be purchased from the shop so the catalogue can be used at home.

Replacing an existing building.
There always needs to be a building on the property.
Ensure that at a minimum, a 5 x 5 block with a door is placed somewhere out of the way before deleting the old building.

Templates
These have been created by different designers and offer a wide range of options in style and size. Once built they can be moved and modified using the various menus. Multiple houses can be built in the yard.

Each template shows the cost to build and the decorations used.

I've not included the build cost or list of decorations and furniture just in case the details change over time. Please refer to the Catalogue for specific details.
The build can still be done even though you may not have all the listed decorations.

Footprint & Doors
For each template I have created a footprint of the house floor so you can see how large they are.
There maybe external awnings, pipes, signage, plants etc that will require additional space to the footprint.

The ceramic bottles have been placed to denote where the external ground floor doors are.

Inventory Items
All items that can be placed into your backpack have been removed so that the rooms can be viewed more clearly.

Workshop Name
The workshop name Break & Make is mine. When you build, it will use your workshop name.

BUILD YOURSELF
Quick reference to creating or modifying new or existing buildings.

Important Considerations
These are some of the main considerations and recommendations before building.

Save
Save before building so that you can 'try before you buy' then restore back if needed.

Cost & Land Expansion
Don't underestimate how much this will cost. It's the fastest way to go broke.
In the early days I would recommend making do with a basic functioning house. Any spare money is better spent on machines and land expansion to build up resources.
Expanding land will ease frustration of getting grid-locked when wanting to expand/move buildings.

Ideas
Have a look at community screenshots of different designs.
Even with the full land expansion it's tricky to get everything to fit without the area looking cluttered and disorganised.
Consider your personal needs and preferences.

Storage Box
Storage boxes that are inside a building that needs to be demolished or dimensions changed are at risk of the contents being emptied. Whilst the contents can be retrieved from the mailbox it can cause a lot of resorting and a lot of frustrating time. This is how I deal with the situation.

CREATE A STORAGE BUILDING (yellow buildings).
If land space is limited and there are a lot of storage boxes to move, create a small footprint ground floor with larger area(s) above.
Ensure that there is an exterior door.

FOOTPRINT
Ground floor: 7 x 5
1st floor: Overhangs the smaller ground floor to give more storage space.
Ground floor.
Ladder ~ Uses less space than stairs (3 x 3).
Bed ~ Essential (4 x 5).
Storage Box ~ Access the others via the menu.
1st floor storage area.
Storage boxes
Furniture
Relics etc
CONNECTING CORRIDOR (blue buildings).
May need multiple sections to link the storage building to the house.
Use archways to link the sections for clear access.
Once everything has been moved to the storage building move/destroy the corridor sections and the old house.

.

Building Blocks

To maximise the height of a building use the option in the Knowledge Tree/Workshop section.
Height
Fixed block height
Stackable = x7 blocks + roof

Footprint
Maximum size = 20 x 20
Minimum size = 5 x 5

.
.

Staircases & Ladders

PLACEMENT
These can only be edited from the inside ground floor of the building.

Move & rotate to the desired area. If doing this after the upper area has been decorated then items may be removed and then retrieved from the mailbox.

The green shaded floor shows the placement area and the dimensions of the footprint.

In this example the upper area is offset to the ground floor. The placement area is reduced because stairs can not go to the roof area.

STYLES
OPEN PLAN ~ CORNER
The space underneath the stairs can not be used for placing furniture or storage boxes.
Doors, windows and wall decorations can be placed.
SOLID ~ STRAIGHT
Nothing can be secretly hidden within.
I've tried, the items just end up in the mailbox.
.

Appearance: Wall, Floors, Roofs

Once built, the appearance of existing internal and exterior walls, floors, ceilings and roofs can be changed. The factory and greenhouse options are discussed in a separate section in this guide because of additional considerations.

It can be confusing; the words walls and roofs refer to different parts of the structure.
For clarity this is how I refer to them here.

According to Heidi ...
"Once installed in your home, it'll be your last and only line of defence against the worst flying sands of the Free Cities!
It's basically just a regular wall to help keep the sand from a storm out of your yard with a press of a button."
