He was super popular with the Roman Legionaries, the religion was structured a little like Scientology in that it was a mystery cult (they don't tell you all the crazy stuff at once and it slowly binds you in, vests you with responsibility), it *may* have been commissioned as a royal project in an effort to address the forever issue of the Legions' loyalty, and then it all disappeared basically overnight when Constantine and his ma reformed Christianity into the Nicene model (there's a historical rhyme here: the first non-Jewish convert to Christianity is said to have been a centurion and the liturgy is based on the procession of the legions).
