Optifine for example, a minecraft mod used by alot of the community including myself is an injector/exe file that modifies some components of minecraft when opened.
Of course some EXE files will be malicious, they can change any file they want when opened, however 90% of the time (As long as you don't install files called NOTVIRUSVIRUSFREEMCCOIN.exe last installed on November 2017 in Russia) you won't need to worry about an EXE file being a virus.
So, please be careful, but as long as you install it from the official website ( https://reshade.me ) you'll be good.
Norton Security, and many others will verify that Reshade is safe. Even if you installed the wrong one: almost of the time your anti-virus will acknowledge it and remove the file.
