Graphical settings, and their impact
****V-Sync, turn it off! - It prevents screen-tearing - Always the first thing to go in my games, if you ever want more frames. It locks your max framerate to 30,60,120+ FPS (Depending on the game tech and monitor Refresh Rate. (Usually 30 FPS, 1/2 or 2/3 of your R.R.)). No changes will make your FPS go past this limit, without first turning V-Sync off or using a V-Sync mode (like Tripple Buffering) to increase the limited FPS a bit.

- Patch 0.4.16428

Ordered by FPS impact.

  1. Volumetrics: Extreme impact. Depending on location.
    Low->Medium: ~2 FPS
    Medium->High: 12 FPS
    High->Epic: 6 FPS
    Total: 20 FPS.

  2. Shadows: Very variable impact.
    Epic: Seems like high shadow areas tank the fps by as much as 10 FPS. Especially hangar.
    High: Extreme varience in FPS. As much as 7 FPS.
    Low->Medium: Stable ~3 FPS drop in most areas.
    Recomended setting: Medium.

  3. Effects: High impact.
    Low->Medium: 0 FPS
    Medium->High: 10 FPS
    High->Epic: ~1 FPS
    Total: 11 FPS

  4. Post Processing: High impact.
    Low->Medium: ~1 FPS
    Medium->High: 4 FPS
    High->Epic: 6 FPS
    Total: 11 FPS

  5. SSGI: High impact.
    9 FPS total.

  6. Lens Flares: Medium impact.
    4 FPS total.

  7. View Distance: Low impact. Depending on location.
    Only ~3 FPS total.

  8. Anti-Aliasing: Very Low impact.
    Only ~2 FPS total.

  9. Shading: Very Low impact.
    Only ~2 FPS total.

  10. Textures: Very Low impact.
    Only ~1 FPS total.

  • Chromatic Abberation and Morion Blur are unnoticeable on the graphs.

    *FPS values tested on my rig. They may differ on yours.
    **Tested in "Alcyone Station" location with MSI Afterburner, while making loops arround the map.

    ***Values are an avarage of the peaks and bottoms on a graph. In case of almost unnoticeable/uncertain impact I put up the "~" mark.
    ****Sorry for the bible at the start... People seem to be mad at me making a condensed statement about V-Sync, and not making a somewhat extensive explanation.
[WIP] Running with Nvidia GPU and V-Sync
In the process of acquiring necessary info to complete this section. Here is what i assume was done to achieve GREAT SUCCSESS with V-sync.

Thanks to @ozzySasquatch for this tip!

1. Toggle V-Sync to the "Low-Latency" mode in-game.
2. Go to the Nvidia Control Panel (Not GeForce Experience).
3. Choose if you want to apply it to all apps or only this game.

4. Turn on the following:
  • Low Latecy Mode - On
  • Max Framerate - On - [Desired FPS] + 1
  • Vertical Sync - Fast OR Use the 3D application Setting

Original Comment:

"After experimenting , I've found using the low-latency v-sync setting combined with FreeSync in the NVidia control panel, with the max frames set 1 fps below the target refresh rate (165hz) gives by far the smoothest experience with no tearing and minimal input delay."
Testing rig
A very modest, low-medium end PC.

GPU: MSI GamingX Gtx 970 - STILL waiting for 3080's prices to be reasonable OR IN STOCK! >:(
CPU: i7 9700k
Game storage: WD Red SA500 2TB M.2 SSD
RAM: 32GB Hyper-X Fury 2666 MHz (Although 16 GB of this I use as Ram Cache)
OS: 2x2TB Seagate Baracuda HDD (Raid 0)
Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B365-F GAMING
Last resort, force DX12 or DX11 API
*I am unsure what API the game uses as default. Earlier it was DX12, then DX11 due to issues, but i suspect, based on the comments section it might be back to DX12 as default.

Try both DX11 and 12 if unsure. Here's how:

  • Step 1:

    Right click on Everspace 2 in the steam library and click on "Properties"

  • Step 2:

    Now type "-dx12" OR "-dx11" without the quotes into the box, as shown on the image.

  • That's it! Start it up, and hopefully it humms.

  • Step 3 (Optional): As for any game, I strongly recomend disabling V-Sync. In most cases this caps your FPS to 60, and in some older games to 30. You also get a fair bit of input lag.

*Q2 - 2021 FYI: Game defaults to DX11 API out of the box, for now. TY @Hazzy!

DEV info

In a livestream, Rockfish Studios Community Representative stated 22.01.21 that there are problems with DX12 and framerates. He recomended everyone to switch to DX11 for the time being.

I want to explain to the community how to do it, even though it has already been done in another guide and said often in the forums, but in different context.

@Pflaster-Rhymes - Thanks for reminding me to add the shadows!

@soulgamer31br - For informing me that DX12 issue seems to be fixed, and V-Sync section needs to be added.

@Hazzy - For informing me about the game running in DX11 by default.

@ozzySasquatch - For some mad tips on running Nvidia cards w/V-Sync in this game.

Thank you for this.

I tried doing as @ozzySasquatch did. There is vertical tearing. It may not be much in the eyes of the rest of you, but to me ANY is unacceptable. I turned V-Synch back on. /shrug

Thanx for the info tho. Better to know than not.

Hahah, lol. It defaults to "Scrubscribe to thread". Maybe that's why?

Well yeah, that's what i assumed, and already got on here. Under V-SYNC, section. Was really wondering about ingame o.O

also, i don't know why i'm getting notifications for a guide i left a shitpost comment on like 3 months ago, lol

it's in nvidia control panel, under 3d settings and then global settings you can click a dropdown box for vsync and enable fast mode, which says it has less overall latency, almost as little as having vsync off entirely. honestly i didn't even know that was a thing, can't remember the last time i looked in my control panel, but i'll be trying it out and seeing what's up

Ah, i thought g-sync was the only one bound to your display. Still curious about the ingame v-sync setting he uses o.O
Catalyst 1 Feb, 2023 @ 1:38am
freesync / gsync is bound to your display, you can't enable it unless your display supports it

@ozzySasquatch
After adding it, I realised there is no FreeSync in the Nvidia panel for me on my 3080ti o.O. Are you sure FreeSync was not in-game?

I also do not currently have the game installed. And was wondering specifically what the in-game v-sync setting you are running is called, if you could help.

Thanks @ozzySasquatch! I'll quote your technique in the guide. :)
